Hi all, well another snowy day here in yorkshire, theres a difference of opinion at the pre-school where i work and just wondered what your views are on this? We are in a pre fab building, and the heaters aren't very efficient keeping off the cold particulary in weather like this. I can't get to the setting, it is up a steep rural hill/lane wht doesn't get gritted. We are in the ground of the primary school which as been closed for the past two days! not safe in the heads opinion... We opened yesterday and had 3 staff and 3 children!! fo two hours new starters.. came at 9 and left before 11am The argument the other staff have is.. they can walk to work…

Hi everyone I am about to embark on appraisals for the first time as manager of a setting (since September). I have found lots of lovely examples on here to help me with the job. I intend to ask staff to complete a pre appraisal form to which I will attach a job description that I will ask them to note any changes to their role. On a recent Safer Recruitment course it was suggested that we ask staff annually whether anything had changed that affected their ability to care for children. I think that appraisal time would be a good time to do this. I seem to remember somebody had an example on here of a form they used to which asked staff questions abo…

Hello everyone , we need to purchase a some new kitchen role play equipment. At the moment we have 3 separate little wooden units -washing machine, sink and cooker. They have been well used and loved but need replacing . I have had a look at the ones in the ELC catalogue , just wondered if anyone has a superdooper kitchen which is sturdy ( we are a pack away group) and one which the children enjoy using as its quite a big outlay and I want to get it as right as poss . Thanks Lizzz

Outside Today? 1 2

Very, very cold today, first day back after hols. I got everyone tidied up ready to go out as usual and the other staff looked at me horrified! They are usually brilliant but my one of them dragged her heels and tried to suggest helpful things that she could stay in and do whilst we were out. We got everyone wrapped up in all their outdoor gear. The 2 staff merely 'endured' outdoor play saying things like 'I know it's cold darling, we'll be going in soon' to the children. Two children were crying because they were so cold and she used that as an excuse to take them in. Me and a parent helper were having a great time stamping on ice, looking at frozen things and r…

Hi I have a member of staff who has just completed her Diploma in Pre-School Practive through the NEC. We have had a letter from her tutor who has stated that she has completed all the modules successfully, the tutor has marked 3 modules which she has passed subject to being moderated? The module sent direct to Cache has come back as a pass. My question is can I now count this member of staff as level 3, althought the tutor has passed all her modules we still have two to be moderated (I assume the tutors marking is checked). We have been told that the certificate wont come through until June!! I am on a course in February and need to arrange cover, so not sure if I…

If the weatherman is correct then we should be prepared for snow over the coming weeks and months. With this in mind, I find myself wanting to make it crystal clear to parents what will happen in the event of snow. Does anybody have a template letter or policy that they give to parents. Here's hoping!

It was our first day back today and although as Manager things should settle down for me now a bit as the administrator (previous manager) has left. However I realise it is never easy and I am looking for advice about another member of staff and her views.....basically she abhors the fact I have said the children's records must not leave the building (previously the staff took notes home to do) and at every opportunity she contests this with me...to the point she insists on contacting Ofsted to get their opinion.... I have stated quite categorically that regardles of what anyone says I don't want the records leaving and all other staff members have adapted to this way of…

Hi All, I am in a Committee-run Pre-school. Does anyone know if we still get the grant money on days that we close because of snow/bad weather/natural disaster? And would staff normally get paid if you didn't get the grant money? Thanks
