Observing Staff

after our recent Ofsted one of our recommendations was to observe staff to evaluate and ensure that our practice and provision is the same . we each handled a child differently during the day for behaviour issues thus not working consistently within our behaviour policy. this ensured we got a satisfactory for not adhering to our policies we have 42 and this was the only one we messed up on and I hasten to add in a very minor way and I do not actually agree that we did. however that is another story. we are a small team of 6 and work from one room we do appraisals and supervision but they want me to do obs and monitor much the same as in a school. I am unsure how to go ab…

Being A Deputy...

...is a hard job! I feel like I get all the responsibility and whilst am involved in decisions am overidden by my boss on many occasions. My question is this, we run a lunch club for 7 or 8 children and my boss has decided to leave a person who is in training for nvq3 but not qualified and a student in charge of the lunchclub. Her arguement is that we are only in an upstairs room if there is a problem and we have walky talkys between the rooms. I am not happy with this AT ALL and have made my feelings clear, only for my boss to pull me aside to say people are complaining that I am creating an atmosphere. but i voiced my concerns to her not others and there probably is a…

Is It All Right?

Hello, I am managing a new setting, opening in January. It is a pre-school and run by a church. Obviously, the committee wants to keep staffing to an acceptable minimum, to see how things go. The question is can a trainee nvq and me be just the two of us until numbers increase? After all, we would still fall into the 50% group. We are advertising for a deputy, but I have been told that this may have to wait until the numbers increase. Lady in question is mature, has lots of experience and BTEC social care or something. I need a definite answer please. Thanks for your help! Lesley

Hi everybody I was hoping that somebody may have experiance of going through the TUPE process. For anybody unsure what this is it is when the comany you work for transfers to another company. It is legal process that protect the thransfering employees. My problem is that I have heard that because I have not worked for my present employer for a year or more I may not be protected by TUPE. This means that the new employer does not have to take on my current terms and conditions and that the day we move over they could sack me or present me with their tems and conditions. To be fair I am on good terms and condititons so dont want to lose them. We have only just…

hi, is anyone out there who owns their own building (e.g. a mobile/modular classroom or similar) but rents the land from someone else (e.g. a school)? i am hoping to just pay utility costs as I will be replacing a clapped out building which the school cannot afford to replace, but wondered how much people pay for land only. thanks, A

Hi, Well we've only been open 5 weeks but along came the nice lady. It went really well but it feels so unfair that you will get that judgement which sticks with you for 3 years and no allowance is made for the fact that you only have 5 week's worth of evidence/plans/developments to show. I'm not sure if I can enlighten you on hot topics. How good the setting is at self-evaluating was certainly big but does not have to be done through the SEF. She stressed that the SEF is only mandatory for schools. She wanted to see how next steps feed your weekly plans and wasn't too fussed about tick lists and highlighting the EYFS statements. She had an unhealthy in…

Hi everyone, hope you can help me. I have been swamped down with the application form for our new proposed building. I have sat for many long hours with committee members helping to put together 3 years forecasts for finances and children numbers plus many more number crunching forms. I am now filling in the boxes headed up ...What impact would the new facility have on.... The Children The Staff The Wider Community The School I have started commenting in the boxes and have spoken to the headmaster of the school for his comments too. Could you all have a think about your own settings and how you would answer the above questions. Then between us all I shoul…
