I Have A Dilemma
by Guest- 6 replies

Earlier this year I dismissed a member of staff for gross misconduct because she turned out to be untrustworthy (menatlly ill I think and in need of help). I have found out that she is now working at the pirmary school as a TA and two people hwo were involved with her dismissal (a committee member and a member of staff) have voiced concerns as she is working in the class in reception where their children attend. Now, morally should I go to the head teacher and 'off the record' ask why he didn't ask for a reference, or am I allowed to do this officially, with confidentiality. She never harmed a child, so I don't think she would ever do anything physically to the child, …

Has anyone completed the leadership pathways course at the NCSL? My head is looking into it for me and I just wondered what was involved?

Appraisals
by Guest- 4 replies

Hi there, I have been asked to do the appraisals for the staff in the preschool committee run setting I took over at at the start of this month. They will be held at the end of this month. I am happy to do them, and think it is an excellent chance for me to find out more about what individual staff members want out of their role etc, but an ex retail colleague of mine pointed out that they are not allowed to perform an appraisal on people they have worked with for less than 3 months - and it got me wondering should I be doing them? All the staff appear fine with me doing it, but is there a 'rule' about it? Thanks in advance Clare

Hi I started my job as manager for a small struggling pre-school in June, had the first half term to see what needed doing then holiday to prepare BUT sod's law decided that I'd be quite poorly instead so have gone back to work with a list of must do stuff that seems to be getting longer by the minute. In no particular order I need to:write SEF!!do short term planning for this term-started it but lost the will to live, next steps for my key children, change rota to accomodate committee's demands to cut costs but also try and stay in ratios, prepare for imminent OFSTED inspection-yikes, oh and boost the number of children coming in otherwise they'll shut us down. This…

What boundaries do you have, if any, with an voluntary NVQ student? For example, do you let them have access to personal files, write in children's learning journeys, talk to parents about what their children are doing? Or because of confidentiality do you feel that these things need to be done by keyworker/permanent staff? Do you have a different induction for students against a permanent staff member? Many thanks

Nursery Setting And Reception
by Guest colechin- 3 replies

I have been manager of a nursery for 4 years. I rent a portacabin on our local primary school site. Over the years, I have seen 7 different reception teachers come and go. I have always tried in the early days to see if nursery and reception children could met and play together once a week. Some times this has happened but over the last 2 1/2 years this has stopped, including transition sessions for when my children were about to leave me to start the school in september. A new reception teacher has just joined, very young and full of energy. Her mum has also just taken up a Head Mistress job in the next village, which also has a nursery on site which is independant …

Hi all, Wonder if anyone can help??? please??? We are a registered charity and have always paid VAT on our purchases. Does anyone know whether we are able to reclaim the VAT on anything we buy? I keep hearing from people that we should be able to but I've looked on the Inland Revenue website and I can't find anything, and what I do find seems really complicated So any guidance as a starting point would be very gratefully received!! Thank you all.

Paired Key Person System
by Guest Wolfie- 17 replies

Does anyone operate a system in their setting whereby their key persons are "paired" so that a child always has someone "special" there, no matter which shifts the staff are working? A parent has commented today that she rarely sees her child's key person at both the beginning and end of her child's day and that she misses the regular contact. How do people get around this issue, apart from maybe setting up home/nursery liaison books? This parent would prefer a verbal discussion and so I don't think that written feedback is going to solve the problem. I'm sure that I've heard that some settings have key persons working in pairs?
