Hi, as many of you know, I've been the manager of a preschool for 18 years now, and an employer for a little longer than that. I have always only had a small staff of 4 maximum, but with our increasing numbers it looks like that might have to change next year. In my mind there's some information tucked somewhere that 'things' change for employers when there are 5 or more staff. Can anyone enlighten me as to what these 'things' are and if they make being an employer more difficult. What laws come into effect once the magic '5' staff are there? Someone out there has the answer and I'd be grateful if you could 'fill me in' Thanks in advance P.S. wher…

Hello everyone!! This is my first post, although I have been reading lots of your posts and enjoying the discussions so thank you!! Now though, i really need your help. I am an eyp in a Montessori nursery. I am not based in a room so am lucky to be able to work in all of the rooms leading practce. I am also doing lots of managerial duties, which is challenging as I have never been a manager before. However, I am facing a constant battle with the Montessori teachers and am now even subject to bullying, as I caught one Montessori teacher writing something really horrible about me and thn was laughing about it in the staff room with other practitioners. This was really…

Payment For Training

Does anyone get paid for training? I have never been paid for any training before but apparently in my new setting they always have been. On our May timesheets I recorded as advised all of our training hours this month which amounts to a good few hours as my staff had not attended training for a while before I took over and needed first aid and safeguarding. I have now been invited to a meeting on friday to discuss training payments so I take it my committee arent happy! I dont want to fall out but surely if we have to do 24 hours of training plus core training each year we should be paid for it?

Hi all, has anyone got any data protection information I can put on the bottom of the registration forms. I read somewhere that it should be produce and written down for parents understanding. I think it was at an LEA meeting, but I haven't got a clue if I still have it and need to be legal. So going to attempt to update the registration forms over the week off. (A managers life is never done. Long dawn out sigh!!!!) Any way thanks in advance.. Luv Kat x

Expectations Of Staff

I need advise from other managers who look after a medium sized setting (60 place). I have a wonderful bunch of girls/guys working for me, all of whom I really like. There are some of us who really undestand the importance of continuing our professional development and those who are happy just being a level 2/level 3 and who don't feel that they need to do extra reading once they have received their qualification. Myself and my deputy try to introduce new working practices etc., but these last for about a week and then I find that they are not continuing on. We are having a parents evening shortly and I have just gone through all the folders. Unfortunately I fi…

hiya, Do you apply for CRBs for new staff as soon as they start work? Do you then reapply after 3 years (or some other time frame?). what about your manager/supervisor? I was deemed suitable by Ofsted and filled in a DC2 in early 2006. I assume they got CRB clearance for me but I never recevied a copy of the disclosure. I tried to apply for one myself recently via NESTOR and they said they sent the application back to me (including copies of ID) as it was not to do with them but with Ofsted. It hasn't arrived so my identity is out there somewhere for anyone to steal and surely Ofsted don't do CRB checks anymore? I have been continuously working there for 2.5 y…

We are very much a "go with the flow" setting, we get a few bits out in the morning but more or less let the children do what they want and I like this but we now over the next year have new 2 year olds starting all the time and I feel that the 2 year olds need more structure - they seem more comfortable when I ask them to sit down and do something ( I think it's scary all these new toys/big children running around!!) So how do we do this.... We only have 2 staff so can't have 1 member of staff doing an activity while the other watches the other chidren (we have tried this and doesn't work for us, a chid always need the loo/or the phne rings etc) so the only thing I …
