Hi A member of staff has just informed me they are to have an op. and will be away from 3-6 weeks. Does anyone know how sick pay works. Will I have to pay her normal wage and also a supply wage as well? Has anyone had expereiance of this recently. We are only a pre-school on a tight budget so I am panicking! Sally

Hi all Well off work at the mo as little boy sick as I am too. But my job share covering so thats ok!!!! Anyway just called supervisor. The current committee are annoyed that the staff have put notice up advertising for new committee members for april (we thought that seeing as they werent doing anything then we would so that it gives current parents a chance discuss it, to attend a meeting etc before being elected!). The chair has told all the current comm members that if they are still interested in doing their current roles to also put their names down as it will have to go to vote if there is more than 1 interested in the particular role...can they do this s…

New Contract Of Employment, Can They Put This In?
by Guest MaryEMac- 15 replies

All the staff were invited to a meeting tonight to discuss the new contracts of employment which needed updating. I am concerned about one statement. It is under Training. " each employee will be given the opportunity to achieve qualifications to level 4. This will be paid for by the playgroup. However, if the employee should terminate their employment with us within a year of qualifying at any level they will be liable to repay the costs of the course undertaken" What happens if you have to leave because of illness or your husband/partner gets another job at the other end of the country? Does anyone know if this is allowed to be put in or not? My husband said that …

Hi, This is a bit of a complicated one, so I hope you'll bear with me. This question has come up at our committee meeting and I said I would ask on here as you all seem to know what's what! The situation is as follows. Our leader has just started doing the EYPS course, which means she's out each Tuesday. The committee previously agreed that they would carry on paying her wages on the day she's out of the setting. Since then, the local authority have given the setting a grant of £2,000 to help the setting deal with the fact that she's out one day a week. Anyway, this has given rise to a couple of questions: - Firstly, because it had already been agreed that…

Hi all, I know it was a little while ago, but I have a committee meeting tomorrow (I'm chair) and we have to make a decision on this, so I'm wondering what others did. We closed for 2 days during the snowy week in early Feb. No one has yet made a decision as to whether we (a) still have to pay staff (they didn't make it in) or ( refund parents. Does anyone have any advice, or can let me know what their setting did? I've looked at the staff contracts of employment and our emergency closures policy, but they don't contain anything relevant. I don't want to upset either staff or parents, but we are a charity run pre-school and at the moment we're running at a loss so…

Extending Hours

We heard today that our nearest preschool are going to go all day from September. This will impact on our provision. I know that we will lose some children because the longer hours suit the parents better. I've already had one parent tell me she has put her child on their waiting list. We are currently open 9.15 - 12 Mon to Fri . The other group, who are 5 minutes walk from us and next door to the school many of our children go to, are open 9 -12. There is a very strong myth circulating that if you go to H preschool you will get into WP school, which we know is rubbish but if it's your first child you don't know how the system works. What I really want to know …

Self Reflection
by Guest- 19 replies

Hi I just wondered whether you do anything with your staff that helps them reflect on what they are doing, how they interact with the children. As a big part of the EYFS is being reflective.... do you do anything in your setting to encourage this with the staff and if so how do you go about it?

Hi I am fed up with waiting for our committee to get around to appraisals and I desperately want to bring up some issues / suggestions with staff that I dont want to do in a staff meeting. I dont feel I have been able to support / develop staff at all and although I have loads of ideas and bring them up at staff meetings I don't feel I am getting through to staff and I want to make sure we are all understanding each other and supporting children consistently. To be honest it often feels like Im there in the staff meeting talking to myself and after they finish I feel it was a pointless excerise. I get the feeling that some of them havent even read the eyfs yet. …
