Staff Wages 1 2

Because we only work 39 weeks of the year but are paid 43 with additional holiday pay, until recently we were paid pro rata over 52 weeks of the year. PSLA came in and said that this was against the law and we couldn't be paid this way anymore and had to be paid on our hourly basis. Having a couple of members of staff who rely on their wages heavily each week this past few months have been a nightmare for them as for the summer holiday period they had no money coming in. However I have since found out that we could be paid 39 weeks pro rata of the year with holiday pay paid in full say 1 week xmas, 1 week easter and 2 weeks in summer. Has anybody else had any de…

Ofsted Recommended Ratios

Just a quick question.. I recently had a job interview and as I knew one of the questions would be regarding staff:child ratios I phoned Ofsted to find out what the correct ratios are. i was told 2 years is 1:4 and 3+ is 1:13 I questioned this as I thought it was 1:8 but she assured me it was 1:13. After the interview (luckily I got the job!) the chair said that I had got the answer wrong and it is 1:8... which is it?? thanks

I would like some advice please. I have a new member of staff who has only been with my for 6 weeks. In the second week she had one day off sick and then asked to go early when she knew we were short staffed. She acted like it was an emergency but on futher investigation I found out it was actually to help her friend clean her new flat. We have had to talk to her a couple of times about inappropriate talk in front of the children (nothing major) and about her chatting to other staff. Last week she didn't turn up for work, no phone call, nothing. Didn't answer calls or texts. She didn't turn up on Monday and didn't phone to say she would be back. This caused us …

I haven't read the whole article but just this short paragraph: Stereotyped image linked to low pay in childcare sector By Katy Morton, Nursery World, 12 November 2008 The stereotyped image of childcare workers as female and vocational-minded rather than academic is to blame for low pay in the sector, says the Daycare Trust. Speaking at the launch of the Daycare Trust's latest policy paper, joint chief executive Alison Garnham said, 'There is no coincidence that the bulk of people working in early years are women. Would they be quite so poorly paid if the bulk of the workforce was men?' Delegates to the Trust's seminar in London on Tuesday (11 November) discussed …

Hooray...a Deputy At Last!

Hi Well Im sure many of you have been folowing our staffing issues :( The committee interviewed for a third time to find suitable candidate- One candidate was a child minder, very good but wanted £9 per hour   ....supervisor only on £7.50! The other candidate was the deputy we had that left 3 months ago (had family issues at time). After a good long chat they have re-employed her. We are all totally thrilled as she already knows our systems, and in the short time she was with us (about 2 months) we really started to gel as a team. Im thrilled a she worked really well with supervisor and was good for in-house training. To be honest the last …

Hi, I work as a nursery nurse in a school nursery. We recently received a visit from the union GMB telling us that all Job Descriptions for Nursery Nurses are being re-written. I am not sure why this is but have been led to believe it is to do with the EYFS and the extra hours of care that settings are asked to provide. My nursery teacher has also confirmed that our Council are re-writing the job description for nursery nurses and they will be in place by September 2009. However, she doesn't know what impact this will have on me yet. GMB have informed me though, that our council is one of a few Councils still employing nursery nurses on a 52 week contract an…

Injury To Child

I didn't really know how to title this one. In 20 years of working with little ones this has never happened before so I'd welcome your thoughts! A childminder came to collect a child from our preschool. She left a [childminded] baby outside, under the canopy, with its rain covers down, in its pushchair while she sorted out the other child. One of our very young children, unnoticed, crept under the pram and scratched the baby on the face. [it wasn't a slight scratch!] Staff became aware when other children said "[] is hurting that baby!" As it was at a handover time staff were involved in discussions with parents etc, and we had a delivery. They hadn't been asked to…

Would You Open?

Hi Just interested in what you would have done in our situation this morning! I got to pre-school this morning to be told supervisor off sick. Nobody could contact chair to organise cover, so agency girl in as deputy phoned the other agency worker we have been using recently (for courses etc). However this agency worker would take at lat 30 mins to get there. So potentially have 18 children, deputy (agency nvq3), me (no qualifications) and another assitant (no qualifications). We then took the decision that we would not open until agency worker arrived as less than 50% staff qualified. Chair phoned 10 mins later and said we should open as agency on way. We discussed …
