Hi, I have reading with interest about lots of settings completely fed up with their committees. I have written a few months back about buying our Pre-school and setting up as a Community Interest Company and I am pleased to inform that I have finally done it! We closed the group in July as a Committee run Pre-school and I opened as a Private Provider on the 8th September. I worked alongside the committee to ensure the group stayed open and minimize disruption to families and children and with lots and lots of hard work and hours of paperwork, I am pleased to say it was the best thing I have done. We work out of a Village Hall, provide 8 sessions a week with 26 chil…

hi all, yet another staffing problem. new deputy has been in post for 4 weeks and has been frankly awful. I arranged to speak to her today to detail my concerns (mostly around constant criticism of our routines and procedures and also patronising attitude to other staff) and she told me she is giving her notice. I am pleased as I don't think it would have worked out but am concerned obviously about where this leaves us with Ofsted etc. I mentioned recently (to maz i think) that I have a very good early years practitioner who is nearly finished her NVQ 2 and who is more than capable of being left in charge. but obviously she is not level three qualified and won't b…

Organisational Structure Help?

Can anyone help? How are Preschools organised? I work in a Preschool which is within the grounds of a Primary school. We are not attached to the school now although once upon a time was run as a Nursery with a qualified teacher. The Head teacher of the school is the manager by name and there are 2 trustees. There is also a Foundation Stage Co-ordinator in the school. I am the supervisor and I have 1 full time member of staff and 1 staff member who works 3 days. My questions are would I be justified expect to have the Manager, Trustees, FS Co-ordinator providing regular support to the organisation and running of the preschool. This is a new post for me whi…

Hi. At a meeting this afternoon the Induction Training Materials were mentioned. I thought I was generally reasonably up to date with most new things (thanks to this site) but this has passed me by! Has anyone else heard of it and/or used it? You can find the info here: http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/learningm...aining/trmatdl/

Our new chair takes her child to a local Montessori and says that as soon as they get there, her child has to trace their name on paper as a registration activity, all the children have to do this have unless they are very young (2 years). She wants us to consider this more structured approach for our children. We are a rural village Pre-school, held in a church village hall, one room. Any comments... especially from Montessorians - do you do this? I feel really uncomfortable about it. Rachel

OK, I've got agreement for a level 2 deputy with agency staff covering in my absence until my deputy gains her level 3. what about lunch breaks though? I would really like to continue to have a lunch break each day and leave the building (but stay on the school grounds where we are based) for 20 minutes per day. does anyone else do this and leave a working towards level 3 in charge? i would be on the end of my mobile and it would take me less than 1 minute to return to the pre-school if needed. this is no longer than if I was in the loo at the pre-school. any advice? I'm guessing Ofsted's response will be negative!! Anju

Interviews

I've been asked to help conduct an interview for a room supervisor - but I'm not sure what questions to ask. They will be taking part in a working interview for the first part of the session with a more formal interview after. We really need a good role model that will help other staff to develop and I don't want to choose the wrong person. What do you think are some of the best questions to ask?
