Something very strange happened at our setting. We have sent off our forms to OFSTED all as per normal and one of our staff had a call from OFSTED to say that they no longer deal with assistants. They told her that it is the settings responsibility to check references and base our decision on their suitability and dealing with children on this. Not for one minute do we think that this is correct can anybody shed any light on this for me. We are all completely bemused by it.

Hi We have many children just about to move from our under 2s unit downstairs into a free flow 2-5 group. This is a massive step for them and their parents are going to find it quite different im sure!Does anyone have a procedure in place or advice sheet they given to parents for easing this transisition or any advice . We havent done this before as we have only just opened the under 2s unit. thanks

what do your settings do about sick pay? do you have back to work interviews? can staff self certificate or do they need a doctor's note for less than 5 days? thanks

Hi Had a query from a friend. Wondered if anybody could help? This group are attached/in the grounds of a school to whom they pay a weekly rent in the region of £65 per week. They were wondering what other groups pay and what is included in this rent? many thanks in anticipation.

Went to a meeting yesterday with EYDCP regarding the Graduate Leader Fund. Looking as if EYP is entitled to a £5000 pay increase. Whilst I totally back the move to an increase in wages how do others feel about the possibility of having the EYP on the largest salary even the manager? I can see this is going to be a major headache and managers turning away from their role and moving back to working with the children if pay is going to the EYP only. It is like as school having the teaachers on more than the Head and there is a massive shortage of people moving into a leadership and management role

Can anybody help? Yesterday a guy came to see me to say he wanted to change a guest house into a day nursery. Fine you might say, except for the fact it is 12 houses away from my setting. This guy has no background in childcare, but is basically a developer and somebody has told him it would make an excellent nursery. And to be fair, the site is good. I have told him a nursery isn't a money making machine people seem to think it is, but I think he is just seeing £ signs. The area I live in is saturated with day nurseries and other childcare providers, which I tried to explain to him. But he reckons his would be the 'Marks and Spencers' of nurseries and so w…

I need some urgent advice how to update a contract. I cannot go into to too much detail but the current one is for 3 months propationary period and I need to give a statment stating that we are giving this person a 1 month extention from tommorow until the last day of term. I am not looking foward to this meeting at all, I just know as soon as I get in they will be buging me to ask when they will get their session with me exept that the chair will be with me too. Trying to wade through elements of business planning. Stuck on the first part - PEST analysis. Stands for Political, Economic, Social and Technological aspects which affect our settings. Have to look at external factors which will affect the future of our setting.
