I have taken over as pre-school manager. One day a week I attend college/uni centre so I leave the deputy in charge. Anyway she rang up (doesn't do this often) to tell me that one member of staff as 'talked' about another. They notcied that the other member of staff is not pulling their weight, who by the way is a level 3 qualified. I agree with what I have seen too, gentle encouragement doesn't work. They talk to other staff when working ingoring the children, disapear to make coffees but doesn't wash up if there is any and is very slow at setting up and putting away, prefering to talk to the parents intstead of the job in hand i.e. talking about non childcare realt…

Being Supervisor Is A Lonely Job..

Hi - feeling a bit down. How do the rest of you cope with managing / being supervisors - I really hate the loneliness of the job sometimes. I am in a small committee run pre-school and don't get me wrong I love my job its fantastic. I'm working hard trying to get everything in place and doing my FD . Recently a new member of staff joined (she is a parent NVQ2 etc and the committee employed her) and since then the team dynamics have changed. My deputy came round for a meeting today and I have found out all the staff are doing the race for life together and have been socialising lots - I now feel pants and totally isolated. I have been trying so hard to ensure they …

Staff Supervision Notes
by Guest- 23 replies

At present, my staff have their own files (locked away), and only the staff member, myself, and my deputy have access to them. Their supervision notes are included in their files. Having been off for 2 days, I got back and had 4 members of staff (1 being a student), all asking to see me that day (it was my deputy's day off). They said that whilst I had been off, my deputy had been appalling - moody, bitching about others, bitching about me, and generally rude. I have heard all of this by rumour before, but have never had any concrete evidence, so I logged everything down, ready to speak to her on Friday when I next see her. I did not go home thinking "what a da…

15 Hours - From Sept 2008

Hi, sorry if this has already been discussed but I am started to panic a bit. After thinking we had until 2010 to sort this out I have now found out our LEA has been chosen to start in Sept 2008. We currently offer a morning (9.00-11.30) amd afternoon (1.00-3.30) session. Like many others we have an hour for lunch and no other breaks. We use the 1/2 hr between 11.15-11.45 (usually only 10 mins by the time all children go) for admin, assessment etc. I could really do with some suggestions about how we could manage the extended hours please. So far all suggestions from SMT seem to lead to working an extra hour a day (contact time) which will obviously mean more time spe…

Hi there, Our LEA will be increasing the free entitlement from 12.5 to 15 hours per week for all settings from sept 2009 and for deprived areas (and I think we fall into this category) from sept 2008. for those of you who are already funded for 15 hours (pathfinders?) how does the extra half hour get funded - is it proportional to the 2.5 hour rate i.e. an extra 20%? thanks, A

Am thinking of opening up a pre-school as from September 2008. Presently l am a childminder working with multiple assistants and two other co-childminders. There has been a lot of requests for funded places which we are unable to offer as we are not accredited. Trying to find information on the internet without any success. The most specific question is the payment of my staff. What happens during non-term time? Presumably, the funding is only for term time. What are the pitfalls?

Hi everyone, this may be a really silly question but my HT has got me confused! I am foundation leader in a maintained primary, and my HT says she has heard that we may have to have a qualified teacher in the nursery from September. She then said that if this is true we may have to have a qualified teacher in the play group too, and even lunch club! This doesn't seem likely to me, especially the playgroup and lunch club bit. Can anyone enlighten me?!

The nursery manager has just informed me that one of the parents approached her tonight and explained that she is sufferring from depression. Apparently, she has been suffering from this since her child was born (will be 2 in June). She says she is receiving support for this (not sure from who), but sometimes worries herself as she has strange thoughts. E.g. when she is bathing the child she sometimes just wants to leave them there unsupervised. The manager said she would pass this on to me (nursery owner) and the parent is quite happy about this, but i am not in work tommorrow as i am on a CAF completer course, so can't see her until Monday. I just re…
