More Free Flow? Over My Dead Body!

Please can anyone help. I am the Nursery teacher and am in my first year of the job. We have 39 chn. and 3 staff. As the year has gone on, I feel that we have done really well with the children and that they are now ready to move from our current 50-50 adult led and C.I. to more of a free flow so that they can direct their own learning more. One of our staff has been in Nursery for years and was told by HT that she was to help me and "show me the ropes". However, we have a clash of philosophies as she harks back to the great days of lots of colouring in and sorting by colour and threading- nothing wrong with these as part of a varied diet, but she would like more of …

Just wondered how everyone ensures that keyworkers don't become too involved with their key children. I have someone who seems to be 'obsessed' with one child in particular, she is very friendly with his dad as well, spending a long time talking to him in the evening, then walking home with them. She will spend 90% of her day with this child, and has started to treat him differently to the rest of the group. It's not that I think there are child protection issues, It's more to do with the relationship she is creating with both the child and dad which makes myself and the deputy uncomfortable, other staff members are also beginning to comment. Any ideas? Maj

Interview

Thanks to those who replied to my last post regarding a job interview. I was a little hesitant to give too much away as I realised anyone could have read what I wrote!!! I now know that I will be interviewed on thursday. My area of 'speciality' is pre-school and would like to ask for some advice on birth to three. Our daycare failed ofsted recently and my new role would be managing that as well as continuing to manage the pre-school. (Posts have been merged). I would like to ask your thougths on the best way to show quality assurance apart from joining a scheme. Is an operational file going to cover quality assurance? We have to really raise standards for the unde…

Assigning Keyworkers 1 2

We have been reviewing our settling in procedures and currently we assign keyworkers before a child starts with us.This means we can let parents know who their child's keyworker will be. Parent and children spend one to one time with the keyworker at their settle visit and this works well and seems to help begin to build a partnership between them. However it seems over the first few sessions some children will be drawn to one of the other members staff which is fine and obviously we dont expect keyworkers and children to spend all the time together but if a child bonds with another member of staff then we are happy to swap keyworkers but it always seems a shame for the pa…

Moving & Working Hours

Can anyone give some solid advice re employment law (I am reading up as well using ACAS). In preparation for new premises and our move we are asking (in written form) what sessions staff would wish to do. Some staff have stated that they wish to increase their hours, whilst others would like to remain the same. However there have been a few difficulties with some aspects and I wonder if anyone can answer this: Could we legally offer staff fewer hours than they are already doing or do we have to continue their current hours? Do we have to consider length of service as a factor when choosing who to offer hours to (ie, the longer term staff and shorter ter…

Please watch BBC 1 Tonight at 8 Pm regarding a private nursery and post back tomorrow!!!!! Why are they targeting only private settings. Another nail in the coffin??? I will wait until I see it but it apparently is really bad example of setting but we are not all like that. In fact I would say the opposite is true. Perhaps the BBC would like to visit a private setting that has quality staff and standards. You are welcome to come to mine. Both sides of the coin!!!!!

Hi there, we are moving to new premises in April, however we will be doing a morning session, an afternoon session and a lunch club (how exciting and absoloutely terrifying). During the lunch club period we may have up to 24 children (I doubt very much whether it will be this many). Does anyone know what ratio of staff we need to cover the lunch club? Also, what qualifications do we need... a level 3 staff member for lunch club? Health and hygiene and anything else? Help much appreciated x

I don't want to say much at the moment due to some things I have been told. Could someone please give me a good indication of what the role of the nursery manager is? I was asked about financial practice experieience, aggghhhh I am a bit lost at this bit due to lack of information given. What does this mean? I have to look at the job description, ofsted report etc and see what changes I could make in that role. Thanks for reading. Beth
