No Children

Just wondered what other peoples thoughts are on this. We are a sessional pre school which opened three mornings per week in the village hall. Last easter increased to five mornings then in september moved to new premises. Since then nos have gone slowly down tried advertising questionnaires etc but not one extra child from this. Last half term committee decided to close at easter. After half term said staying open but gave a weeks notice to cut our hours two staff then left. We now have two remaining. We are now open three mornings again. On average we have 4-5 children per session which is sad to watch them. The committee have got some funding from somewhere to keep it…

Pre School And School

I just wondered whether there are any more Preschools in a similar position as us. We are based in a small primary school. We are in the same room as the reception class, the reception teacher and I plan together for all the children, making it easier to differentiate. We have a committee made of school governors and the head teacher, who I am answerable to. Without the school, the preschool would have no where to o and without preschool, there would have to be a class of Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. We are working towards extending school services to Breakfast, After School, Holiday clubs, parent classes and support etc. which is also part of my job. How involv…

Minimumwage

For all those employers, I have just read that the minimum wage has gone up by 21p per hour for those over 21 years, 17p for those 18 - 21 and 13p for 16/17 year olds. Although I know the staff deserve it, but frankly I don't know how I am going to find this extra cash. If I charge parents much more I won't get as many children through the door, which obviously will result in job losses, but at this rate my sustainability is looking pretty dodgy. £5.73 21+ £4.77 18+ £3.53 16+ with this and the huge amount of revenue I loose by offering NEG hours to children and only getting £8.00 (instead of £18) for a session, it's going to hit settings and PARENTS hard. …

Looking for some general advice / wondering if anyone has had similar situation... we have a child entering our 2 year olds room after easter (8 children, 2 staff) who has regular fits (almost daily) staff are naturally anxious about this. advice on first aid course (staff member is updating at mo) is that other children should be taken out of the room - giving rise to obvious ratio issues . is a child with such a medical need entitled to any extra funding to facilitate extra staffing or is this something we simply have to plan to deal with? any advice on what needs to be considered when writing a care/action plan for this event?

Waiting List
by Guest- 5 replies

We are in the process of moving and word has rapidly spread. At the moment we have 40 children on the books, many of whom are aged 3. We are concerned that we could disappoint a number of families by not having space to accomodate them. This has led us to question the following: Are we able to limit the number of sessions offered to existing families to say 6/7 per week? Is there any criteria which will allow us to offer places to those in the immediate vicinity first? Should we make any changes as a temporary policy or a permanent fixture - there may be changes where we may not be so oversubscribed Is there a requirement for us to inform Ofsted and o…

Help! Will hopefully have a job interview for a nursery manager position in the next two weeks, this will be a bit of a leap for me but due to restructuring I have been adivse to go for this post as my current post no longer exsists. Does anyone have any words of wisdom or comfort??!! I think my main problem is self doubt. I wonder if anyone is willing to share what they look for when hiring or how you got your current role perhaps. I am feeling uncharacteristically stressed!

What A Meeting!

Anyone in Cheshire attend the meeting this afternoon re: the implications of the funding and the 'flexible' entitlement? Well if you missed it - get to the next one! You really need to be there! Wow! Lots of 'very strong' views expressed across all sectors of PVI providers to the LA reps regarding how the proposals for the NEG is going to be allocated etc. I don't think the LA was quite prepared for such a consensus of opnion. Never been to anything quite so emotive before. I am sure there will be further meetings, as people left with questions unanswered and there was an awful lot to take on board. Will keep you posted of Cheshires developments for the future. So…

Rewards

Hi, We have used a star chart in our nursery room for the past few months (5 stars = a sticker and 10 stars =a certificate). The children don't seem that enthused by it anymore and was wondering whether anyone can suggest any tried and tested reward systems. Thanks for your time.
