Happy New Year to you all, hope you all managed a little bit of time off. I am struggling on how to manage the new 30 hours. I have been advised by our Early Years Business Manager to change the way I offer sessions - at the moment I offer very flexible hours - basically parents can book in for whatever hours they want and pay for what they use - eg 0930 - 1300 and only pay for those hours although the session starts at 0900. The advise was to run 0900 - 1300 morning session (4 hrs to include an hour for lunch) and then afternoon session 1300 - 1600 (3 hrs) - then children who only access their 15 hrs have to attend afternoons (our quiet time). If parents want morning…

I expect many of you have watched the GMB report on the safety of nurseries. If you haven't seen it you can watch it from here. Tulip Siddiq responded to the report today, you can watch her interview here I thought Gill Jones did very well under the barrage of questions from Piers Morgan, she had very little opportunity to put her point across. I wonder if GMB would be interested in a follow up story about how great nurseries can be? I'm guessing that we all feel the same way about the report - but what it raised for me was the potential issues and scenarios that can arise when managers are not complying with regulations - the staff have a responsibility to b…

Hello all! I am currently in the process of taking on a new member of staff. As a very small setting, I have in the past always paid for the new employees DBS check and for the up-date service. However, I have been thinking recently is this the norm? Do settings still pay for new employees DBS checks and the annual up-date service? If you could be so kind to share what you do and/or the industry practice at present it would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Hello everyone. Well after stepping down as manager our new manager of my preschool lasted 6 weeks! (I hasten to add thrre was no conflict) Left due to pay not being enough to what the job entailed and she got a job as ta with less paperwork and more money..that's another story! They have now decided that they will increase the pay of the role. So as deputy I am back to managing until they recruit again. Should I be expect to be paid for this and should it be at the pay of what the manager was on or what they are going to advertise it at? Just wanted opinions. X

Just wondering if any other settings are having real problems these days recruiting suitable qualified and experienced staff. Also, if those of you that have been doing this a while have noticed a difference in terms of how hard it is to get staff. And are the quality of CV's/applications declining? I used to find that when we advertised in the local press we would get dozens of inquiries and at least half a dozen really good applications for a shortlist. These days I don't use local press as I can pay for an advert to be in for two weeks and not get one decent application. I think I am even sometimes appointing people that I probably wouldn't have chosen 15 years ago.…

As a setting we have always celebrated a number of festivals throughout the year, including Christmas, Diwali, Chinese New Year, etc. A new staff member has now said that she cannot participate in any Christmas activities. We are unsure how this may affect our celebration of any other religious festivals over the coming months and whether she will also choose to withdraw from these. Obviously we want to be inclusive and include all festivals, including Christianity, but we also want this staff member to feel valued and part of our team. This is obviously a very sensitive situation, as we like to do winter activities with the children, but wonder how we can reorgani…

We're reviewing how we manage staff break times and I'm wondering what breaks other people give their staff. At the moment we have a half-hour lunch break plus 15 minutes morning and afternoon - which are all paid. Please would you mind saying what breaks you give during a full-day shift?
