Performance Review

I have a member of staff who is on Performance Review. She is being reviewed weekly. Her targets are very specific (related to attitude and professionalism); she understands them; and more importantly - they are realistic and achieveable. HOWEVER, within 4 days of them being set, she has already not adhered to all of them. I am meeting with her on Monday about this. What happens with someone on performance review - when they do not achieve manageable targets? She has already been overheard saying: "Well they can sack me if they like - but I know my rights and I'll take them to court" (honestly!!).

Nursery Manager Presentation

We're in the middle of devising questions and a presentation for applicants for a nursery manager position. Does anyone know of an actual quote by someone about staff being the best/most important resource in a nursery - are there any management gurus who have said anything along those lines? We want the presentation to be about how, as a manager, they would ensure that this resource was used most effectively and wanted to start the title of the presentation with this kind of quote. Any ideas........? We could just make one up but I just wondered if there was a good statement anywhere?

Staff Not Turning Up!
by Guest- 10 replies

I've had a bad day - can I have some more words of wisdom please? On the last day of term, a member of staff didn't turn up for work! She had asked for the day off as she was struggling with childcare as it was inset day at the local school. Because we had no other staff available to cover that day (they were off on hol's that day or unavailable) the day was declined. We had a chat on several occasions and I went over how important it was to have back up for childcare and it was a difficult part of our job, especially inset days as we still have to work etc etc and run pre-school. But she was advised on this occassion although I would like to help she couldn'…

What A Blow!

After searching for a year to find the right person to lead our Kindergarten we finally found someone who was qualified and had experience....... in Australia. We employed her and it worked out well, so last month we put in our work permit application with a great rationale. We were told it was a shortage occupation and it wouldn't be a problem. Our member of staff went back to Oz a few weeks ago to gain entry clearance and is just waiting for her paperwork. All was going well and provisional approval was given until today. I found out today that the application has been declined! (4 days before she is due to fly back) They admitted a few days ago that it was t…

Can I have some ideas please on how we can choose the right member of staff this week at interviews? We have been advertising in the local press for a new assistant and we have finally got some applicants. Really long story of disasters - we are committee run and our parent secretary sent all the applications out with not enough postage or to very odd addresses as she can't spell ( I found this out a week too late). I came back off holiday to this mess! We have re sent out the whole lot, with lots of apologies and I have arrangesd IV's for this week , but do you have any hints and tips on making the right choices - I have downloaded the questions from the w…

Staff Contracts

We need to redo our staff contracts and if anyone could help I would be most grateful. I have done a forum search and read all the posts but ......... Most staff have changed the number of sessions they are working, the hours were changed from 3 and a quarter per session to 3 hours! and the rates of pay have all changed too. Our last signed contracts were issued years ago! Having been promoted to supervisor, it is now my job to sort this out!! What is bothering me is that it is compulsary for staff to attaned planning meetings, complete key worker files in your own time, go on training days etc but that NONE of this is paid for. I have tried to address this wi…
