The nursery I have taken over has over the last year and a half had a rough time. Inadequate ofsted, poor management, high staff turnover, etc etc. For the last month since I've started I've been A) sorting out the managerial mess left behind and trying to boost staff morale and C) recruit staff in order to have enough staff to enable a more efficient working environment and take the pressure off the others. This week I had two new staff starting- both dynamic and exciting and raring to go. One in particular really hit it off in her room and the room started to come alive with ideas and activities. EYFS pop into see me and comment on how they get a good feel from…

Not quite all,but quite a few staff have left and are leaving in a very short space of time.3 resigned while I was on holiday! Various reasons-I can't compete with wages in schools, moving away, fancy a change etc. How do you tell parents without it sounding as if you a-rubbish payer b- all staff not happy c-will have a Nursery full of upset children? Ps on the other hand someone who left a couple of months ago, for extra money, has asked to come back so we can't be that bad!

ok, so I've sorted out the keyworker groupsfor September allowing staff to have some non-contact time to keep up with their obs etc.....this has now opened up a can of worms with the staff rota. We will have 5 staff in everyday this includes myself so I would like to be able to have some office/paperwork time!!! I was thinking about allowing 15 mins a day for key group times so this will obviously have to be taken into account. This is how our session normally runs:::: 9.00 welcome & self register 1 x staff 9.15 - 9.30 settle in and free play indoors 2 x staff (2 x staff setting up outside) 9.30 - 11.15 free play inside/outside (inc adult led activity) …

by Guest Wolfie- 13 replies

We are in the process of advertising for a nursery manager and are thinking ahead to how we want to run the interviews. We would like to ask candidates to do some kind of presentation as part of the interview but are struggling for ideas about what to do the presentation on. Has anyone done something similar, either as an interviewer or interviewee? What sort of subjects have you seen done as presentations? Any ideas very gratefully received!!

Moving Premises
by Guest- 7 replies

Does anyone have any experience of moving premises? I'm trying to move ouor provision for September and having no luck finding a suitable space. My budget is £750 per month and it's proving impossible. I'm a bit hesitant to look at residential properties as I feel the planning permission would be a struggle to get through (parking & neighbours' objections). Any advice or has anyone been through a similar experince (and come out the other side)?

Pay?

Just a quick question for all of those whom work in pre-school and claim nursery education grant. What sort of pay are you on? I find myself doing teaching, planning and taking more and more work home every week to keep up with the demands of Ofsted. I am basically doing the same job as my sons nursery teacher (lots more hours though and no 13 weeks paid!) I am basically on less than a third of what she is on. Obviously I know and understand she is a qualified teacher and so should be paid more - but is their any long term government strategy which will change this. Am seriously considering packing it all in at moment - sorry about the rant! xx

Has anyone else read the article in Nursery World about insect bites and stings? I was pretty shocked to read the advice that every setting "should have an Epipen to hand in case of emergencies". Surely we shouldn't ever use them indiscriminately on any child? Aren't they provided by a child's parents if they have a high risk of a reaction?

We had a foster carer bring a child in yesterday , saying we have to deal with her and if mum turns up we cant stop her taking him but we have to call the police We were quite alarmed by this so phoned social services who said yes this is correct so I have asked that they put something in writing to us. You would think they would deal with this with a bit more urgency at least letting us know in advance.Ive just phoned them again I feel uneasy and unsure of what action to take how I can support the child as I havent a clue what is going on! Can anyone help or advise please Do you have any kind of form that you feel i should complete. Awful that I should be t…
