Work Experience Children
by Guest- 28 replies

It is the first time we have ever had a bad experience with work experience, but I have to say we cannot wait for this one to go. It is like having an extra child in the setting and we already have 26 on most days. Today she has sat on the dough table and spelt her name out of play dough - done some colouring in. Read some books and generally wound up the children. When I say she has played this is not played with the children she has been sat on her own most of the time playing not even talking to the children! We have had her in for a week and this is her 2nd she does go on Friday, but I had to have a stern word with her today. She has been carrying the chil…

How Much Admin Work?
by Guest- 17 replies

Hello Can you let mw know how many hours they employ an admin officer for? We are a sessional pre-school in a community hall running 5 sessions a week and we are commitee run. The committee employ an admin officer for 10 hours a week and she is responsible for budgets, money, collecting fees, funding, wages, waiting lists and various odd bits. I've just had a lousy weekend as she has suddenly announced saturday night by e-mail that she wants more hours every week to complete her tasks, even though she's does the budget and knows its tight. I am very aware it is a really busy time of year funding, wages and end year of tax all have to be done - but it norma…

Consultation Meeting
by Guest- 2 replies

I've spent the morning at a meeting with a Lead officer in the LEA going over the new consultation that has to be in for the 1st June. Well it was 2+ hours of getting no where. This is the consultation where they want to know do we want to be brought in to line with schools on how our funding is calculated and on how we count our children etc. We kept asking for information on the FORMULA that is used to calculate how much schools get per child. Also that the School Forum that allocates our money is all made up of school Head Teachers and Governors. I have nothing against governors or teachers but they have no idea on how much it costs us to look after a child. Th…

Hi all, very excited!!!! Went to see the hall available to rent for new preschool it was lovely very large and clean, two girls toilet, 1 boys and a disabled toilet. I have load of questions for you all if you could help me. There wasn't much storage space about 6ft by 4ft do you think its feasible to store equipment at home and take it in daily? No equipment can be stored in the room as it has other users in the evening. There is no access directly onto the outside area children would have to leave the building go round the side to the back of the building which is secure do you think this could be a problem when registering etc? Other users use the building but …

Staffing Delivery Of The Foundation Stage Curriculum
by Guest Wolfie- 12 replies

This may seem like a very simple question with an obvious answer! I am battling at the moment to ensure that the staff at a full day care (8-6) nursery I support deliver the Foundation Stage curriculum for funded children consistently and regularly every day, in two 2.5 hour sessions. There is an "identified" member of staff to lead delivery of the curriculum within a room for 2-5s but the shift system means that sometimes she doesn't start work until 10am (when the first session starts at 9am) and at lunchtimes she may be having her lunch when the second session should start. The attitude is...well, if she's not there then the Foundation Stage doesn't happen until …

Hi Feeling a bit dense and am confused about bank holidays. Do you pay your staff who would normally work on bank holidays? A colleague has said that where she used to work, some time ago, people who normally worked on say a Monday got paid and people who worked other days also got paid an extra day. Do we already get paid this with holiday pay entitlement or will this be addressed when the increase comes into effect in October? As you can see, very confused, feeling dense. If anybody has the time and patience to spell it out to me in words of one syllable I would be eternally grateful!

Holiday Pay
by Guest JPH- 4 replies

We are fortunate to use a payroll service, and have had the following confirmation re- hoilday pay, which is increasing over the next 2 years: From October, holiday entitlement will rise to 4.4 weeks (24 days). The following April this will rise to 5.2 weeks and in October 2008 it will rise again to 5.6 weeks (28 days) pro rata. To work out holiday pay (based on current entitlement of 4 weeks): (number of hours worked per week x hourly rate) x 4 = total holiday due in a year. If staff member works odd hours, take an average for the year or the last 9 weeks whichever is more practical. If staff leaves part way through the year: (annual en…

Has anyone set up a nursery in school grounds? if so what ages does it cover? I was speaking to a first school recently who may wish to proceed with this idea, they suggested me buying a portacabin and paying them a ground rent? Just wondered if anyone has gone down this route and what problems they encountered if any, what type of rent , opening hours and fees- are they similar to private providers? Thanks

Hi We have recently been having this conversation and I wondered what everyone calls the person/people who isn't doing a focus activity, isn't observing , but is developing children language through play, encouraging them and chatting as well as all those other things like managing he water, toileting etc etc. Ive always used the term facilitating but noone seems to like it, but I have to laugh when planning says...X' will 'float around!! even though I know what that means, it always conjurs up an image that could make it all look airy fairy. Has anyone got a fabulous title for this person and also has anyone been through the process with their setting of saying exac…

Hi everyone, Committee have asked staff to think about other ways we could structure staff (supevisory etc). At the moment we work as I believe most preschools do.... Management Committee, Supervisor, Deputy Supervisor and the rest of the staff (all Qualified to level 3). Deputy is leaving in July and one member of staff is going on Maternity leave for 9 months. Committee want us to rethink if we need a Deputy or how we can reorganise staff... Supervisor spends the majority of time in the office (kitchen in the Community Hall to be honest) dealing with paperwork with the Administrator. All staff plan and take keyworker responsibility. My question is 'How do yo…
