HI, for the ones of you that have read my other post ' what a wake up call', you will know i am holding an 'urgent' staff meeting tommorow. I know the issues i need to tackle (lack of team work, bitching, not following procedures, no respect etc) but i really want the staff to think for themselves too. so i was thinking of asking the staff a couple of questions. these may be: : Tell me one way you work as a team member in this nursery (ie what do you do to make the team work well) : Tell me one way you do not work well as a team member : What does the word respect mean to you : why do we have policies and procedures. I was going to ask all staff…

As some of you know I went for an interview last week (friday afternoons interview), I did mention my hearing impariment, they were fine about it and very enfusisitc (sp). Well on Monday I metioned my hosptial appointment to the centre manager and I rang back up afterwards when she wanted to ring me back at the hosptial. So on Tuesday night she then went on to mention my hospital appointment, I went on to tell her about it i.e. hearing impairment. Well then she said she would call on Wednesday (she didn't) I rang up today (no answer back when she said). I attend hosptial appointments for my ears every 6 months for an hearing test and to see the doctor, this proce…

HI all, Today i carried out an exit from work interview with a member of staff who is leaving, she was initially asked to complete a pretty bog standard questionnaire then we got together for a chat. How interesting it was She was totally honest with me and i thank her for that. She has opened my eyes to the level of bitchiness that exists between two rooms, i did know about the bitching but only on a superficial level. I now know the depth of it, and im shocked She explained how some staff spend too much time chatting and 'lounging around', i am so angry at the staff. She also explained that some staff are not following nappy changing procedures, (not…

Observing Your Staff Working
by Guest- 16 replies

Hi, I was thinking that since its new year, and im not hugely happy with the work going on in one room, and question the quality of work going on in another room. I was planning on observing staff in each room for a day possibly more, to see their practices and interactions with the children. I am a little wary that staff will change the way they are if they know im watching, but i don't know how elase to 'assess' how they are working. as i say i have issues with one room, and they know it, and they also know i am going to observe in their room to see how they work and then to be able to feedback ways to improve the room (its pre-school room) and i have worked in p…

First Aid
by Guest- 15 replies

I work in a nursery attached to a school and from the end of this month our nursery nurse will be the only named first aider for the school (this is all we legally need but up until now we have had another first aider). We are concerned about the volume of 'casualties' that could well be descending upon the nursery needing to be seen by the first aider. What happens in other settings - is it only the first aider who administers any first aid i.e. would other staff clean up minor scrapes or apply cold compress to minor bumps? do all these minor injuries get checked by the first aider & who writes up the accident record. We have a list of any children who c…

A Little Thanks

Was driving home and a few examples of good practice that I have seen the last couple of days popped in to my head. Then I realised that I had observed them, and only thought to myself how good they were, and how pleased with them I was. I never got round to saying a 'well done' or anything. I've just sat at home and quickly devised these little notelets, so that I can pop one in people's trays every now and again - AS WELL as giving them verbal praise at the time. They're a bit daft, but will be appreciated I think: By_the_way.doc

We have been very frustrated recently when we have invested a lot of time and money in extending employee's professional development, only to then have them go off to children's centres because they can pay considerably more money!! I have been hearing from a number of people that they are building in a clause in to the contract or a separate contract for the student to sign to say that they will stay at the setting for 1 or 2 years otherwise they will have to pay the money invested back to the employer. What do you all think?? Have any of you set up this contract style document?? I would be interested to hear from you all!!
