At present our policy on medication is... we will only administer if it is prescribed, i firmly believe children should not be at nursery if they require calpol etc. We have recently had two situations that have made me rethink this policy. Firstly, a child in our care had a temp of 38.6 (our policy is to send home at 38), after trying to contact the parents (and failing) then trying to contact the 3 emergency numbers provided (and failing), we became increasingly worried as the child's temp increased to 39.5 and we were still unable to contact anyone... after 1h 45mins the mother finally contacted the nursery after receiving one of the countless messages left. …

We are a 32 place nursery, we have a good staff team with a very low turnnover in staff. Most have been with us 3 years plus!My Deputy Manager is leaving at Christmas as she feels that she needs a change of career, my Supervisor is leaving in 2 weeks - she doesnt really need to work financially and feels its time for a change too! I suppose I am in a bit of a panic- at my two key staff leaving. There is no-one really strong enough to fill these positions within the Nursery so I am having to advertise- but this is so new to me. I have been considering taking a step back from being a full time manager for some time now as I have 5 children and also manage a preschool and …

Severe Separation Anxiety

We have a child with us whose mum has been staying in session with him for quite some time and before he started he would come along with his brother (who had exactly the same behaviour). When mum tries to leave he screams the place down. We have tried mum leaving the room, mum leaving for 5 mins and then returning, finding out his favorite toys, building up a bond with the keyworker and other staff etc etc. I feel we been down every avenue with no improvement. Ifeel that some of the issues are due to mum not really wanting to let go, drawn out goodbyes, extra hugs (prolonging the hugs etc). The mum will often phone and say the child wont be in today because of a 'ba…

Staff Training Matrix?

Hello all hope everyones well! We are constantly sending our staff out on different training courses some which expire and some that don't. I felt that it would be handy to have a staff training matrix/grid on my notioce board that would show an overview of all the training that each staff member has attended and when they expire e.g first aid so i could immediatley see on one chart when people needed to update training and which staff haved attended which courses! If anyone uses any thing like this or knows where i could obtain any thing like this i would be really grateful as i can't think of a way of designing one myself - my mind has goned blank!! Many Th…

Committees As Employers - Help!
by Guest- 5 replies

I am supervisor of a preschool and we are run by a committee. I can't find any rules on what they should do and what staff should do in terms of recruitment. Our applications go to the chair but she asked the staff to shortlist as we knew what we needed - makes sense! The committee officially interview with staff on the panel to advise but they have looked to us to set the questions - again, makes sense. In theory the committee have the final say on who is employed but there haven't been any problems with that yet. But if the people on the interview panel disagreed with the staff - who would legally get the final say? Also - promoting staff. In the past the previous supe…

Hi everyone Had a problem today, wondered what you would have done in this situation. Earlier this week, a committee parent asked us if we would be able to take her child 5/10 minutes early, 4 days a week, for the next 6 months as she is starting a new job. We said we would discuss it our our staff meeting (today). Although we felt inclined to be helpful, we felt that this would set a precedent and other parents would follow so felt we couldn't help even though we would like to. We told the parent this, and that it would take us over our 4 hour sessional registration. The parent accepted this and even said that if we opened on time she could probably make i…

Fire Safety Law 1 2
by Guest JPH- 38 replies

Have you heard that fire safety law is changing in October 2006? The new law will emphasise preventing fires and reducing risk, make it your responsibility to ensure the safety of everyone who uses your premises, and do away with the need for fire certificates. A set of guidance notes has been developed to tell you what you have to do to comply with fire safety law, help you to carry out a fire risk assessment and identify the general fire precautions you need to have in place. The guides are designed so that a responsible person, with limited formal training or experience, should be able to carry out a fire risk assessment. Guidance can be obtained from www.commu…
