I Know Its Been Here Before

Yes I know its already been on here, and have looked at previous threads and links but am looking for something a bit extra and would love someone to help me out with this . . We already have a student introduction file and a staff induction booklet, but its sooooooooooo boring! It has the routine of the day and copies of the Policies such as child protection, health, safety, equal opps, confidentiality etc - but it is in desperate need of a revamp. What do you do with yours to make it get its point across yet isn't dull? Feel like there's so much to be included that it wouldn't get read. Would love to include something along the headings of the 5 ou…

HI we had our last ofsted 9/feb/2005 and there were two actions on our report. I have now realised that the old manager did not create an action plan following on from the report. My director wants me to do them, but have we left it too long? I was not even working in the setting when the last inspection was carried out. if i do have to do an action plan re the actions, then how do i write it.... i.e is there a specific format Dawn

Team Conflict

I've been reading a Team Building book by William Dyer, and part of it is about Staff Conflict, and how at times it gets to the stage where everyone has to sit down as a group; be honest with one another and thrash things out themselves. I'm not talking about important issues such as planning, or observations; or heaven forbid the children. No - in my setting I have very young (female) staff who are rather bitchy and love a good old moan and a gossip - generally about 1 another. It has now got to the point where this is their prime objective!!! They come to me regualrly, and share their concerns, and I have spent a lot of time dealing with issues and supporting …

I was reading a section in the news of nursery world today and I noticed that we will be given 28 statutory hoildays (including Bank Hols) which makes 20 days and 8 bank hols or pro rata. This makes me laugh as in the past I had 20 days plus 8 bank hols working full time. People are complaining about it , as some childcare setting only get 20 day including bank hols. Well we all work hard in childcare and deserve a well earned break of 28 days per year! Later on I read that the National Minimum Wage will increase: over 22 years from £5.05 to £5.35 18-21 years from £4.25 to £4.45 Now who knows that was about to happen not me, now I will ask for a mini…

Dear all, I am in the process of working with a company that is hoping to produce monthly newsletters to childcare providers about legislation changes. The obvious information is changes to Ofsted and the inspection process and then I have thought about Central Government changes (Nursery Education Funding, EYFS consultation) then more non-childcare specific things like asbestos, fire, health and safety, licence requirements for driving a minibus etc. Has anyone else got any thoughts on other areas of legislation that have a daily or otherwise impact on running a childcare business. Your thoughts are all greatly appreciated! RB x PS Of course, I will l…

Managers Time Management

HI Is it feasable, and indeed acceptable do you think for the manager to spend some time working in the nursery rooms?. guess you can't take the hands on nursery nurse out of this manager hee hee and im itching to try and spend some time in the rooms, particularily the pre-school room as that was my initial base room. I know i would have to divide my time equally between all the rooms (and office) and that is fine but i really don't want to be office based all the time. this week i am in pre-school and the deputy is in the office. I know i need to be in the office for a proportion of the day every day and that is fine but i want to stay connected to the rooms. …

Swearing

Does swearing infront of children constitute a disciplinary? Before I worked at the nursery, I am aware that the issue was addressed with 1 particular staff member - but not much done about it. I found out at 6:15pm today from one of the team, that the same team member has been doing it again, saying: "Well babies don't understand". Obviously I am going in tomorrow to address it straight away, but just wanted some advice please - I'm fuming!
