Tangled In A Muddle

HI well i have been manager now for two months, and so far no major hiccups! (touches wood quickly) BUT equally i don't seem to be getting anything achieved..... Trying to think what i have done / started since i took over.... Okay, i overhauled the planning and made it simpler (that was a weekends worth of work, the joy!) I produced a BT3 and FS info board for parents (stayed late after work to do) To be honest those are the only two things i feel i have achieved in two months, how bad is that! Time was spent interviewing and rectruiting staff. The last manger left the operational plan in a muddle, with post it notes all over it, i am just pulli…

Nursery Grant
by Guest- 14 replies

Anyone see the BBC news this morning about the situation about nursery grants? I just get so angry when each child is being allocated £3600 and up here in the north east we are receiving £1500 from the LEA. Where is the other £2000 PER CHILD!!!! going. OH dear here I go again- it just annoys me so much as a private nursery owner that we are on a different playing field as regards nursery funding but my service in my opinion is as good and my staff are my backbone and deserve help in their salary from central government. In one of my last posts my local Surestart were advertising 21 jobs totalling a combined salary of £334,500.00 per year- is this where the funding went!!…

Direct Debit And Christmas Opening
by Guest- 8 replies

Hello We are contemplating making payments by Direct Debit mandatory for all parents at our nursery to cut down on the amount of time we spend chasing parents for Payments! I was just wondering if anyone else has had a change over to Direct Debit and whether you lost any parents because of it and how well it works? Also currently we open between Christmas and New Year but are considering closing at this time. Could anyone tell me whether they open at this time to help me make a decision as to what to do and whether you still charge parents if you are closed at Christmas? Thank You

Apprenticeships

I am soon to be taking on a Childcare Apprentice. Some of the applicants have had some work experience in childcare, and some are completely new to it. With this in mind, what would you consider to be an appropriate way of watching them with the children, as part of the selection process? E.G: just watch them generally in with the children; ask them to get involved in a small group activity with another member of staff; see if they can bring in a resource to use??????????? I am a bit stumped - after all, it is down to us as a nursery (as well as the college) to train them up to the standards we expect. Tricky?!

HI I may be in a muddle, about a month ago i interviewed for staff, we enployed one full time unqualified member, and we also interviewed our long term student ~ she gave a fab interview and we verbally agreed to offer her thirty hours a week. since that verbal offer we have two issues. firstly children have left/ dropped out of taking up places so if we employ our long term student (as we had agreed) we would be drastically overstaffed. second issue is this persons work is causing some concerns some of the time, sometimes she is demotivated and sits around, but equally when asked to do something she will do it without moaning. so, since i offered her thi…

Today was not a day I was looking forward to. Meeting at 2pm at preschool ( dark, dismal hall) to tell 2 staff that due to low numbers in September, the threat of local school opening a nursery and increased rent etc, to ensure continued viability I had to make them redundant. Staff number 1 ( who has been with me for 5 years) said she was expecting it, and ended by saying "Well might as well go home now". She is I feel very angry with me, and feels totally let down. Staff number 2 ( been with me for 3 years) is my staff member with learning difficulties, I didn't know if she fully comprehended the rationalle behind my decision ( she didn't say anything), s…

Recognition For Staff
by Guest- 5 replies

Just saw a whole page advert in the local newspaper, where a secondary school had put in photos of their pupils and put what exams and grades they got. It was basically a huge 'Well Done'. How good would it be to do that for staff in your setting, to well done for training and other achievements, etc. Especially if you could get in something about all of them. An expensive idea I know, but a great one nevertheless (many of my ideas are expensive unfortunately!!). AND....what a good advert for the setting!

Hi, I am keen to employ foundation stage teachers to teach my 3-5 years old groups. It would appear that there are very few nurseries that employ QT's and only public preparatory schools offer this and charge a premium for it. I'm not looking to charge a premium but I do want my 3-5's to be taught by QT's rather than nursery nurses who are given guidance by a QT on occasion throughout the year. Is there any reason QT's aren't used in nurseries - does it take me into another set of rules or something if I have QT's rather than nursery nurses? Also, I understand the child:adult ratio when QT's are employe is 1:20 - I plan to have a QT and a classroom assistant per 20 child…

Good News At Last-need Help
by Guest- 4 replies

I cannot praise this site enough but I do feel while posting I am usually in a "down" mood just letting off steam but I have had some good news for a change and looking for ideas!!! My local authority is to give me up to £5000 to spend in my nursery over the coming months but it must involve an activity that will nurture the children ie music, health, sport and involve an outside body coming into or we visit. I have come up with museums subscriptions, speech and language therepists, theatre groups. Has anyone used anybody for this kind of venture and could they recommend anyone? I am in the North East of England. I only wish I could use some for equipment to stretch them bu…
