How Many Deputies?
by Guest- 13 replies

I am trying to find out whether you HAVE to have a named Deputy Supervisor on each session as well as the Supervisor! We are a sessional preschool, open at the moment for 8 sessions a week, we will soon be opening for 10 sessions per week. Our supervisor works 4 sessions a week, I supervise 3 and deputise 1 session a week, we have one other staff member who Supervises 1 session and is deputy 3 sessions and as she works over 2 days only (she has another job) and is unable to be flexible. My supervisor wants to promote another 2 members of staff so that we would have a 'Supervisor' and a named Deputy per session. This would push the wages bill up and also create a…

Risk Assessments

Does anyone have a checklist of Risk Assessments they'd be prepared to post? I sometimes feel there's a new one suggested on every document I look at, and it would be reassuring to know how many others do. It's so easy to go overboard, but obviously I want to do my job well!

Hi All Last month a child left quite suddenly a lovely family, always took a lot of interest at what their child had been doing etc The child missed sessions quite frequently as he was ill quite a lot. The parents wrote us a letter to say work commitments had changed and for financial reasons he wouldnt return. Last week the parent came in to pay outstanding fees and had a very different attitude! requested all her sons work development notes, observation books etc and his clothes- not so pleasantly! We provide shoe string bags for slippers and spare clothes as parents bring in huge bags. This mother as far as we are concernced didnt use shoe bag and carried on usi…

by Guest- 9 replies

Hi All! Was just wondering how I would go about setting up a pre-school in a local community centre? My knowledge in this area is very limited, but it is something I would maybe like to try and do. I have seen a nice location but am unsure as to how I would go about setting provision up. Would be very interested to hear how others have managed to do this, if you are willing to share your stories! Thanks

Dismissing A Member Of Staff
by Guest- 10 replies

Hi everyone! I hope someone will be able to help me with this one. I have a member of staff who was employed on a temporary contract to cover a nursery assistants maternity leave. She was employed on the recommendation of another member of staff, references were checked too, although she only had minimal experience of working with children before. She has worked for us now for five weeks and in that time she has not managed more than a three day week. The excuses have been varied and very inventive!! That is when she has actually phoned and not just not turned up for work. When she does manage to come to work she is late and on one occasion left without tellin…

Please help, Im struggling so much! I own and manage the Nursery we have been open 2 years . We are open 8-6 every day registered for 20 children and in the process of opening a baby unit for additonal 12 upstairs. We are in that awful stage of making do with staff rather than employing new as we have very few under 2s. We have quite a few part time staff and started free flow play and changed the playing to be around the individual children instead of the environment- about 6 weeks ago and its chaos. I appreciate staff dont like change but since starting the free flow they have been so demotivated, its just not working and I cant pin point why! I feel we have gon…

How Long To Keep Which Records?
by Guest- 8 replies

Sorry if this has been asked before [even by me!] but for the life of me I can't find references to which documents etc should be kept for what length of time. Things like children's personal records, registers, accident books, incidents etc. I know some of these things are only advisory, but I feel I need to have some sort of checklist where all the guidleines are in one place, if you see what I mean.

Complaint To Ofsted
by Guest- 25 replies

Hi I found out today that a complaint has been made to Ofsted regarding my provision The complaint stated that I am careing for two many children in the baby room on a Tuesday and a Thursday and that we leave students unattended during lunch breaks. I have to stress none of these claims are true. I am well under the numbers of children allowed in this room and I only enrol up to six children as its all I have staff for at the moment. I have a very small nursery and so both playrooms meet for lunch, making it a social occasion, so at times there are more than the stated number of children in the room but of varying ages. Since all children are seated and …
