Where to begin? Not sure if any of you good people can help with this one but thought it would be worth a try. Took over paid admin in September, pre-school assistant by day. Alledgedly paid for admin, naturally am way over hours paid. Accounts one year behind, hence need for paid admin. Promised ledger would be updated before handed over last September. March - committee asked treasurer to hand everything over as is because situation was not going to alter, handed over this evening still not uptodate. File of receipts, invoices, etc, bank statements, no record of what exactly income is made up of ie fundraising or fees because this was done by another perso…

I am the deputy supervisor of a pre-school and will be taking over as supervisor in September (or possibly earlier). I have a member of staff who is very keen to be the new deputy. She is a level 2 but doesn't necessarily want to do the level 3 training (she is in her late fifties). She is a reliable and keen member of the team and would be a great support to me but can she hold this position as a level 2? Any advice gratefully received!

Do We Need A Contract Of Employment?
by Guest- 12 replies

I am hoping that someone else has come across this problem before and knows the answer. We have a new member of staff who is employed in our preschool one session a week to help one-to-one to support one particular child's needs. If this child is going to be absent then child's mum rings her to let her know that she is not needed and we don't pay her. If our funding for this job were to dry up we couldn't guarantee to continue to employ her. We have not drawn up a formal employment contract, we just pay her for each session when she is with us, rather like we would a temporary member of staff. Is that OK? I suppose our question is - when do we legally have to have a c…

My new setting currently has 20 children on register. Of these 20 children, 5 are under 3. I understand how to work out ratios when the age groups are split, but when they are mixed together, I totally lose the plot! I really want to get this right, as I'm in my new job, so if anyone can shed some light as to how ratios are calculated for mixed age ranges, I would be really grateful! Also, my boss seems to think that because we are a pre-school, we do not need to work within the BTTM framework, even though we have 2-3 year olds. Am I right in thinking that we SHOULD be working within both the FS and BTTMF? Clare

Supervisions And Appraisals
by Guest- 2 replies

I have started my new job today and one of the first things I was asked to do was to draw up a suitable supervision/appraisal sheet. It seems the setting currently doesn't use a particular format and only brief notes are made, but because our premises are shared, it seems that pieces of paper often go missing I was just wondering what sorts of things I would need to have on the supervision/appraisal forms? I know there should be sections relating to progress, training etc but other than that, I'm a bit unsure. Any help or advice would be great. Thanks. Clare

My daughter has a job interview on Tuesday. As part of it she has to deliver a 20 min literacy based lesson on the theme of jungle animals to a reception class. She's thinking of basing it on the song 'through the jungle what do I see' but its difficult to come up with a cohesive lesson for just 20 min. Any thoughts anyone. Al

Training

We are having great difficulty in getting in out '4 days curriculum training' per year. In fact we cant seem to get on any courses, they are all full or too far away. One staff member tried to get on the 'birth to three's course in October 06 and was told it was fully booked!!! Anyway, I was wondering if any of you use 'in house' training providers that come to your setting and do all the staff at once? I have tried looking on the net but cant find anything! Thanks Jenni

Deputy/supervisor's Children
by Guest- 15 replies

This is just a query, are supervisor's/deputies allowed to have their children in same sessions? Some years ago, we were told that your own child couldn't attend the sessions with you, I'm not talking as extra, he will be included in the figures and will claim funding as everyone else. We have another child starting soon too, he'll be paying fees and will be as part of the ratio, it's just that his mum will be deputy.
