New Food Hygiene Regulations
by Guest- 17 replies

With another of my hats on I found out that new food hygiene regulations came into force on 1.1.06. Knowing this was likely to have implications for our youth group which has a tuck shop as well as other food served in our church I looked on the Food Standard Agency website which was very helpful and informative. They recommended if I wasn't sure what to do then ring our local environmental health department for advice, which I duly did. Apparently not only do the church have to register with the Environmental Health Dept but so does our sessional pre-school as our parents pay for a service which also provides food, albeit a snack. We have to fill in a detailed regist…

Fee Payments

Help! I manage a Nursery and have a parent who has now bounced 5 cheques in one year. I have tried working out payment plans, giving her the information about debt counselling at Citizens Advice, and believing her stories about unexpected payments going out and Tax credit mix ups. I have written her a letter to back up talking to her and have asked her to pay the debt in full, in cash, before we will have her child in again. She said that she might be able to get some of it. The seriousness does not appear to have registered with her. I find the paperwork a nightmare with the accounts when cheques bounce and really have not got the time to keep doing this. Wh…

Hi, This is the first time i have posted on this website. I have been looking at all the forums and i have found them very interesting, its a great site. I have been asked by my committee if i could draw up some job specs for a committee run pre-school, i'e chairmans role, secretary etc. I wondered if anybody knew where i could find this information out. Also does anybody know where you can find out about job specs for equal opps and behaviour, we have to do this for the accreditation. I would like to wish you all a happy new year.

Employment Law
by Guest- 7 replies

Hi all, Had a really interesting drunken conversation about employment law. Found out that I have no idea about current legislation over sickness and disability. If I could remember the actual conversation I wouldn't be concerned but can't and won't see this person for another year. Anyone in manager/leader position know where to get all this information from. I am attending a course in May, but am trying to get things in order as ofsted are making their drop in visits in our area. I am committe run but my chair's are only prepared to be in name only, so although in an ideal world, they are technically responsible, in a realistic world I have to sort it all out and am now…

New Children's Centres

This is going to be a bit of a saga but I do need to get it off my chest. I run a private nursery school registered for 52 children a session and I have up to 139 childrn on the register with a long waiting list. We offer session or full days (9.00 to 3.00) and draw form a large catchment area so do not link to any particular school. We get fantastic feedback form parents and our reputation spreads by word of mouth and we hardly ever need to advertise. Please do not think I am complacent about our setting but I want to put in context my concerns. The sure start 10 year strategy does not seem to take account of premises like ours and despite our success I feel conc…

Ta3's Covering Absence
by Guest- 4 replies

Hi, I work in a nursery school (I am the only teacher) with a part time head teacher and two TA3's. I was ill last week and my absence was covered by a teacher who comes in one day a week to cover my PPA and management time. However during the staff meeting the head said to the TA's that if I was ill for another day then they would have to cover the class. (We would be covered legally for numbers). This didnt happen as I went back to work the next day but the question came up as to whether it is legal for TA3's to cover a nursery when there are no qualified teachers on the premises. Obviously in larger schools there is usually another teacher on site or the h…

Staffing Qualifications And Duties
by Guest- 7 replies

hi all, my leader is concerned over a prospective new staff candidate. she is fairly new to the area, and has a NVQ2 in playwork. She wants to know if she could be employed in preschool as an assistant, if so, will she be counted as in the 50% unqualified or qualified? and if yes, can she keywork with an mentor? My leader is under the assumption that you cannot key work without a level 2 qualification at least, and i would like to clarify this information for her. Please lend me your expert advice, Peggy thanx kizzy

I Have A Problem!

Would really appreciate your views on this please. I'll try and keep and short so here goes .............. We are a Committee run Church pre-school and hire the Church hall. The hall's not bad but since 2002 I have been asking for a risk assessment to be done on the premises to link with the risk assessments that I do (daily/weekly/annually). I have still not had one and no one wants to take the responsibility for doing one. The Pre-school Chairman (the Vicar & our employer) has buried his head in the sand and seems to think I am making a fuss about nothing. The Centre Chairperson told me that it is not her job to get one done. They hire this hall out to oth…

Work Experience
by Guest- 10 replies

Hi, I have just been contacted by an agency "Education Business Partnership" who organise work experience placements for teenagers. They now organise this instead of the schools direct. I have had people aged 16 yrs from them before for a weeks work experience. They have asked me to have a person aged 14 yrs for one day a week starting this month and staying until july next year. My query is because I have never had a person this young for this length of time, has anyone else experience of this age student? I've checked with my insurance they are ok (public liability) Any tips or things I should consider? Peggy
