Hi Steve, Haven't been on much recently. Had a run in with my committee last October and was thoroughly disillusioned with everything. I work on my own and when the parents are more or less saying they just want a glorified creche and think everything else is a nonsense (Planning, observation, assessment etc) its hard to get enthusiastic about your work. My husband managed to talk me out of leaving and I've battled on without the suppport of the committee. Just 4 more months till the next AGM............ Beau

Home Visits

We are working towards the Bristol Standard acreditatation scheme. Today's dimension was Parental and Community Liaison. Part of our discussion was about making home visits. We don't do them at present but a lot of local settings do. None of us have any experience of home visits but we are very divided on whether they would be of benefit to the children or not. Does anyone do home visits? What is the benefit for you, the child or the parents. Are there drawbacks? Al

Recently, one of my employees was returning the television to the store room (14” portable) and as she put it in the floor, she placed it on her little finger. I checked her finger and although it was slightly red there was no indication swelling or bruising and she was able to move it. I advised her to apply an ice pack and ensured the accident book was completed. She claimed she thought it was broken and needed to go to hospital for an x ray. I asked her to remain at the nursery for 15 mins to allow cover to be arranged and then said she was free to attend hospital if she felt she needed to. I said I would appreciate her returning to work if there wasn’t anything w…

Has anyone working in a pre-school written job descriptions for any of the following that they wouldn't mind me seeing? SENCO Health and Safety Officer Named person for Equal Opportunities Named person for Behaviour management Named person for Child protection Obviously they will be slightly different for different settings, but we've been writing these for our accreditation and I'd like to check whether I've missed anything obvious from them. Thanks Carolyn

Staff Issue

Hi, I have always tried to enable a work/life balance with my staff but have a dilemma. A member of staff needs to get her child to and from school, but is also needed as an employee for adult:child ratio's. The school is in walking distance from the preschool. Last term this was not such an issue because I had enough staff members to cover the "school run". She is now required on ratio for opening and closing times. She has asked neighbours, friends, and I have suggested she could ask parents who attend the preschool and have an older child at the local school to help. She has chosen not to do this. I am unable to cover these times by changing …

Staffing Issue

Hi I have a Nursery Nurse who is a very good practitioner but who likes to think she runs the place. I am the nursery teacher and was appointed this term - she has been there since the place opened, along with the previous teacher (not too many years ago) so understandably feels it is 'her' nursery as she helped develop it. I appreciate that and also feel for her in that I am making some changes - physical, curriculum and routines that are quite different but I am discussing these with her and on the surface she is vary adaptable. However she clearly doesn't agree with some of the changes - for instance today I was giving some stickers out ( she does NOT approve o…

Dear All, Haven't been on for ages and I am not too sure if anyone else has posted this up as yet - couldn't find it - so apologies if someone has - just ignore this. Just when you think everything is running smoothly, the DfES has now produced the consultation document regarding legislation and the new 10 year strategy. Makes very interesting reading. For those of you about to start your QA scheme suggest you take a look at the section in Investors In Children section - looks like they are doing a full turnaround here!!!! It seems to me that they are placing much bigger emphasis on the LA to provide early years education and be accountable for it. Looking at p…
