Staff Cut Backs

hi all, im now looking at my september intake (i know its only june!!) and it looks like my numbers are low and im going to have to make some drastic staff cut backs. my question is this, i know im going to get lots of complaints from staff, but surely my trained staff should be given the majority of the sessions? i know their more expensive to pay, but they can just get on with it. i work 7 sessions per week as leader (we open 8) and i might have to cut back to 2 or 3 a week, pay is not great but i cant afford to do this as im sure other staff cannot either. would you agree that trained staff get priority? would it be better to average the sessions, say me f…

One of our mums who used to be employed at Nursery told me today she had applied for a teaching assistant post at a local school and I would be receiving a phone call for a reference. My understanding is that it is not a good idea to give verbal references but to state we will provide a written reference on request. Am I right? Although I have nothing to hide I am very reluctant to give a verbal reference which could be misinterpreted or I could get drawn into a conversation I don't want to have. All comments gratefully received!

Just checking.......the Head intends to pay a classroom assistant in my school on the Nursery Nurse scale because she will get more money. The assistant has NVQ3 and I just wanted to check that this is equivalent to the former NNEB. I don't want the nursery nurses or other classroom assistants to be upset because of wrong pay. I expect the Head is right but I thought I'd check with all the experts on this forum!

We are soon to have a new parent rep which i am feeling quite dubious about Previous reps have either been too involved or not involved enough. I think it would be a good idea to compile terms and conditions for the position, including what the role would entail, but i don't have a clue about how to get started. Can anyone help me with what needs to be included in this document? Thanks in anticipation

Staff Turnover 1 2 3 4

Hi, It appears that some topics get hijacked by disgruntled staff ( with good reason) As my new year resolution is to be positive I wandered if anyone would like to contribute some management tips which promote "motivated, happy staff" or could employees give us managers some ideas of how you wish we could improve ( constructively, of course) always willing to learn. Does anyone know of any GOOD management courses out there, you know ones that relate to our particular profession. I've attended some, even did a management module on my ADCE a few years ago. However, they are like "behaviour Management" training, quite broad and non specific. So maybe as a for…

Is This A Scam Or For Real?

Wondering if anyone else has come across this. I recently received a letter from a company offering to sell me a licence so that I can show vidoes & dvds in the setting. It said that it's illegal to show them without the licence, as such videos etc are bought for home viewing only, not for groups of children to view. I do have viedos in setting, but haven't played them for several months since the tv got broken. We have never used the set to watch tv. The videos we have are mostly donated by parents, with the odd freebie that comapnies have actually sent to us unsolicited - e.g. the BBC. So I'm wondering if this letter is genuine or someone trying to make m…

Registered Person
by Guest- 13 replies

Hi all, Just a query about who is normally the "registered person" For example: A chain of Nurserys are the owners/directors the "Registered person" or do they put the responsibility of "Registered person" on the individual managers of each setting? I had this discussion today with someone in a chain who does the latter, stating the owner had no childcare qualifications/experience etc. I then asked in the event of a Non Compliance of any of the standards or even a health or safety issue who would be ultimately responsible? Where does the buck stop, the "Registered person" or the employer? I am aware that in committee run groups the committee are desi…

Playgroup Work Overload

Hi everyone, I'm a Reception teacher and Early Years Coordinator. Our school has a Playgroup on the premises and at the end of the year they send home a wonderful booklet to each child's parents with really detailed annotationsand photographs etc. They really are fantastic....but they are all absolutely worn out from chasing their tails with the paperwork and I've been asked to help them out by seeing where they could reduce the amount of paperwork that they're doing. Trouble is.....I don't know what they SHOULD be doing and what is extra. Sorry to sound like a duffer but I'm hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction to find out, or share what …
