Children's Centres

Does anyone out there work in a Children's Centre? Do they have any words of wisdom, advice, pitfulls to avoid? Does anyone think it would be beneficial to start a topic on this subject? My setting will hopefully become a Children's Centre (awaiting decision of Sure Start Unit). Due to endure months of building works for an extension, baby unit and Sure Start building (including creche, cafe, co-operative shop and probably a lot more besides). I'm planning to grin and bear the upheavel and I'm sure the children will enjoy watching the diggers etc and role-playing being builders themselves. Any similar experiences out there?

Sickness

As Foundation Stage co-ordinator of the FS unit within a Primary school every member of the team is very valuable and sorely miss when they are off sick. But they are missed even move when it means he rest of us have to work twice as hard because school policy dictates that when a non teacher is sick there is no cover. This maybe fair enough in a normal classroom situation but in our situation it mean that an area has to be crossed like a room or the garden because there is no one there to staff it. I have spoken to my head about this many times but she will not budge. Is this normal? What happens in your settings?

Parent Helpers

Help - advice is needed, we are a pre-school community playgroup and rely on parent helpers to keep our ratios to the levels we believe are best for our children attending. Several of our parents this term are complaining that they are on rota duty to many times and wish to opt out. We base our rota duties on the number of times a child attends the setting per week. If their child attends 4 times a week, we ask the parent/carers to do 4 rota duty sessions per half term. The main dispute is that we cannot allow unregistered children under 2 years into our 3/4 years of age sessions. As staff we need the support of the parent/carer to enable us to give our full attentio…

I have four areas within my nursery and currently one of the areas (1 - 2 year olds) is becoming a real problem There are four members of staff within this room (all qualified), one of them is fantastic, she has only just started and from what i can see perfect in every way! She has a thorough understanding of what her job entails, she interacts with the children at all times providing a secure and entrertaining day. Onto the others..... from what i can see they lack motivation, enthusiasm, knowledge of childcare and anything which means they break out into a sweat! Myself and the deputy arranged planning meetings so they could contribute but they only came back wi…

New Supervisor Position
by Guest- 13 replies

Hello everyone, hope you can help me I have just taken over as a supervisor of a Pre-school in September. I enjoy this new postion...except....THE PAPERWORK. It is mounting up and I have very little time to do this, often it's at home. Calling various people, sorting out courses, children's fees, staff wages, calculating how many children will be funded, showing new parents around the school, talking with parent at the beggining and end of the day, I am also a keyworker to 6 children and I find it difficult to record their progress as I do not know the children as well as when I was working as a Deputy, due to more time being spent in the office. I do get…

Not sure if this is the right place but anyone who has experience of a child who has jehovah witness faith -help!!!! We are a small preschool and have a lovely little lad joined this term. Our current theme is celebrations and mum has said weddings are fine but christmas and birthdays are out. I ackowledge and respect that but with the build up to Chirstmas not far away I am concerned how we can ensure this child is included and remains very much part of the group but cannot join in anything related to christmas. This includes no stories, no art work, no singing that is in any way Christmas related - I am a bit stumped at the moment and am concerned that he wi…

we are about to revamp our prospectus to give to new parents/carers. I seem to remember reading somewhere, I think on this site, of settings where a brochure was also given to the children before they start. I think this sounds a lovely idea, can anyone help if they have such a thing many thanks, Sandie

It's finally happened. The numbers at playgroup have picked up enough that my committee has decided it's time to take on an assistant. The trouble is that I've only ever worked on my own - first as a childminder and then as the sole member of staff at playgroup. Does anyone else out there work in a setting with just two staff members who could give me a bit of advice? I don't want to scare them to death by expecting too much of them, but nor do I want them to think I'm not letting them do enough. I'm sure the committee will be asking me about a job remit at the next meeting so want to be ready.
