We are starting these this month, but the EYFS lead has said I have to do the nursery nurses ones - she does their appraisals. She is a reception teacher. I would have thought she should link them to appraisal otherwise it's a bit disjointed? What do other school EYFS do? Thank you

Hi, I've been told that when tracking cohorts, another group we should be mindful of are 'Summer Born' children. What constitutes a 'Summer Born' child? Is it children born in the Summer Term (ie: March-August) or is it just the Summer months - so June, July August? Thanks!

Just checking to see if I have missed something - a student has mentioned that all settings should have an allocated Police Officer who is named in their Prevent/Safeguarding Policy? - Has anyone else heard of this?

Hi all. I had an email from a parent asking for a report on their child as they want to defer his school entry for a year as his birthday is 30th August. I said no problem I will do this but you must get it in writing that he can go into reception in 2016 and not year 1. No problem she said, she needs to get all the evidence and then the head teacher decides. I then said that if he stays in nursey he will only get 15 hours funded for the year, did she want to book him in for the same sessions. No she said four days 9am until 3pm. Errmmmmm well he might as well be in reception then at least he could do mornings as he is so young and not ready for it....... H…

You will remember that the Chancellor changed the business rates for small nurseries - you can read this Nursery World article to remind yourself! You can register with the valuation Office for information regarding when your business rates have been reviewed. You can sign up here

Do any of you charge deposits? I know we cant charge 3 or 4 year funded children but we can charge others and I've just realized we can also charge 2 year funded a 'refundable' deposit. We have been so messed around this year, in fact I cant remember a year where quite so many people have changed their minds, dropped sessions, changed days, asked to delay their start dates and just generally messed around! I'm not even sure charging a deposit would help the situation as its not really people changing their minds that the issue but more accepting the place and (so they say) accepting we cannot hold the place until their child s funded and then when the start date come…

There is an interesting article on MBK Training website re the proposed increases to providers/LA's indicative increases for 2016-2017. Sorry cannot do a link but if you go to home page and click on EYNFF Analysis it gives you your LA. Mine looks likely to be 0.14p ph. Taking me to £3.77ph. Sadly not enough! : ( Just wish they would take the "free" out and let us run our own businesses!

Sorry to all those members who have done ratios to death!!!! I know manager must have a L3 and 50% of staff must be L2 or above. Is this across ALL members of staff, or members of staff per session? Some days we have 2 ×L3 1× L2 and 4 × unqualified!!!! This only happens twice in a half term due to days off etc. Will I be running understaffed and have to re jiggle! ?!? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!!!!

Bear with me, this could be long. I lead a committee run pre-school which in itself shouldn't be a problem but of course the committee is made up of volunteers. Well our new chair and treasurer are the worst I have ever had in the 7 years I have been there for the following reasons: 1. Wage slips - we haven't had one for about 4 months and they have been very intermittent over the last year. 2. Wages - for the second or third time we haven't been paid on the correct day. We should have been paid on Friday as it's the last one in the month but this hasn't materialised. This seems to always happen when we have a bank holiday so makes it even longer to go without mo…
