One of my 'to do jobs' was to check the 2 members of staff I have with DBS checks on the update service - only to find neither of them registered for the update - stating they knew nothing about it. I know for a fact I asked them both to do it and said I would pay the annual fee, but didn't chase - looking at the system it has to be done within 19 days - seems an odd number but both of them are way beyond this. Do staff have to be on the update service? - Each year they all sign a declaration to say nothing has changed etc - is this sufficient? Appreciate any help - thank you.

I'm the owner of a large day nursery and I am lucky enough to have a fantastic manager who is as passionate about early years as I am. I wondered if people might find it interesting / useful to know what we are talking about at the moment in terms of making sure that we are geared up ready for 'full steam ahead' next week when all our funded children return. I thought that maybe, over the next few weeks I might share with you the bullet points of our discussions so that any new owners or managers get some ideas - I am also hoping that some people might point out to me where I could improve what I do or point or anything I've missed ... As the owner I have invested a hug…

Our manager has been mostly off work since Feb with a couple of serious different things which have required recovery. The last operation she had has caused a massive problem in that her arm has lost all movement from the shoulder down, just nothing! She feels able to return, being quite well in herself but I'm so far not allowing it because she cant do anything with her arm. She's cant do paperwork and I wouldnt want to leave her in charge of the children with one arm permanently strapped up and I cant think of anything else she could do. Her current sick note runs out after half term but her arm has been immobile since June and physio is so far not havin…

Does anyone know of any apps that you are able to communicate with parents with that are cheap or even free? I've had somebody on the phone today showing me a demonstration of one which I have to pay for and she is wanting me to ring her back shortly. I've been stung with a few times in the years I have been in operation by different organisations. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be very grateful. Thanks Deb

Good afternoon, I have been on the forum for a while, but this is my first post! I am a nursery manager and have been approached by a local school to enquire about some of their young people to come to us on work experience. Has anybody got any advice?

Hi I am in the process of employing new practitioners. My old reference letter seems a bit dated. Is there anyone who is able to share what their reference paperwork looks like. Also can anyone advise me on health questionnaires for new staff and what they may put in their paperwork. Are we still allowed to ask for this type of information. Just not sure but want to be able to do it right..

Hello!! I was wondering if anyone knows what the rules are on requiring a DBS for contractors that will be working onsite at a Nursery. For example we are thinking of getting a handyman for DIY jobs to come in once a week and same for a gardener also. Do they require a DBS? Thanks

I've put a few posts on recently and was feeling really positive about the new term being the new owner of the business but 2 days in now wondering why I did it? We had a healthy register - 1st day two children failed to return - I checked with the local school where they had siblings to be told both families had removed their children from the school - no contact from either family despite me phoning etc asking them if they were coming back - so can only assume they are not - 30 hrs a week lost. Then another parent tells me she is moving in the next 4 weeks so I won't be able to claim for her child - do I bill her for the hours she is using until she moves? Another 18 …

I was wondering if anyone has had to deal with an employee who has poor attendance due to "being ill" and is off work 1 or 2 days a week every few weeks. As you will all know getting a text first thing in the morning saying my stomach hurts so I will not be in today causes great issues with staffing/ratio's for rest of the day and high costs to get supply staff. I believe we can ask for consent to write to their doctor. At what point would it be classed as fair dismissal?
