I am having a dispute with my manager over staffing ratios at lunchtime. A child couldhave been seriously injured if I just hadn't happened to come out of the office at the time I did. There were only 2 staff with 18 children, and one of them was in the kitchen and not directly supervising the children. (Over 3's) My manager says ratios are a Guide-when I said they were legal instructions she said we can get round this because there are other staff in the building eg in the office. My question is-do ratios mean working directly with the children, not just in the building?

In our policy on mobile phones we state that visitors and parents should not use their phones in the setting and put them on the office side (with ours) or away in their bags in a locked cupboard. Had a visitor recently in to see a child,so a formal visit, and when we stated this she insisted that she needed to keep her phone on her because she was expecting a call urgently. We tried to insist but she was not happy and said that Ofsted would want to keep their phones on them as they are work phones as was hers so she should not be expected to comply. It got us wondering about when Ofsted come if they would want to keep their phones on them as well and how this conflicts w…

I was wondering if anyone could help me... My school has a Nursery attached to it (part of the school, not privately owned) and we are low on numbers. From September we are considering offering the 'spare' spaces to parents who wish their child to attend full time (6 hours a day, 5 days a week) for a fee (so they'd receive 15 hours free, 15 hours paid for). We take children from the term after they are 3 years old at the moment but this may change to 'rising 3's'. We do not have he facilities or staff to have 2 year olds as well. Does anyone do this in their school and if so how much do you charge per hour for the extra 15 hours? Thanks in advance if you're ab…

Hello everyone With National Living Wage and pensions looming I'm looking how to bring in more revenue. We are about full so it's about how to actually get more money not increase my numbers. The obvious thing would be to put up fees but after phoning around local settings it would seem we are more expensive than they are already. I know the other settings are struggling financially as they've kept their fees so low but I'm concerned if I increase families may just go where it's cheaper. Any thoughts?

We have recently put all our staff through online training about the Prevent duty. It was such an easy and quick way of making sure everyone was up-to-date that we would love to do some more. Does anyone know of any good and reasonably priced online training? We already have the PLA courses so anything other than those.

Our county are changing the headcount dates from next term. Previously we did a headcount maybe 2 weeks in and a mid term adjustment 2 weeks from eot. We had two payments a term, one the first week, then final payment after half term Now they are taking the headcount at the END of the term! We get an initial payment judged I guess on Spring term - not sure what percentage. Summer term will now apparently run from 11th April - 26th August - when we will receive our final payment! Well it doesnt run to 26/8 in my book!! We are term time only - whats happening? Looks like this is yet another move to sideline term time only settings to me!! And its very rude …

Volunteer in ratio?

Hi does anyone know if a volunteer who has a valid DBS (arranged by herself, but verified by us via the update service) can be counted in ratio? We have an issue on our hands at the moment as we have a member of staff leaving imminently and haven't been able to find a replacement so far. I'm getting concerned about ratios once she has gone and we don't really have any leeway in our ratios at the moment. I have asked committee to complete EY2 volunteer checks as well in the hope that they can help out. The volunteer might be up for becoming a paid bank staff person, and I'd like to think we wouldn't have to request her to do a separate DBS check for us, otherwise …

Hi, I currently track attendance on paper - go through the registers weekly, put absences on each child's individual file and reason for absence, then flag up any concerns at our weekly management meeting, or call a safeguarding meeting if required. Writing all the absences onto individual files is sooooo time consuming! Has anyone found a free (or very cheap) app that can be used? I've been looking at a few but can't find one I like yet. They all seem based on regular, daily attendance like schools, whereas our children can attend anywhere from 2 mornings to 5 full days. Help gratefully received!

I'm after some advice. At present our preschool is a pack away setting based in a village hall. We are restricted to certain opening hours due to the hall being booked up regularly. We have approached our local school asking if they would consider letting us move to their site- either to join them or stay as an independent setting. They have agreed to meet with us to discuss. Has anybody else done this recently and what are the pros and cons. I want to go in with some good pointers to try and win them round. They do have space after being given more land for the school to expand as it is going from lower school to primary. We would be prepared to cover the cost of a prefa…
