Bear with me, I should know this, I dont even want to phone ofsted because they'll think I've just landed! Our registration certificate used to say 26 children aged 2 to 5. Now it says nothing except we must work to the Foundation Stage thingys (!) I have a vague memory of it changing but I cant recall and I need to know because our manager has told 27 children they can attend on a session  Did it change to numbers based on ratios rather than room space or something?

Nursery World have a new survey to ask opinions on the financial implications to settings on the introduction of the Living Wage and funding levels and Pensions. A fact : If we don't continue to tell them how bad it is out there financially, more and more settings will close.:(:(

Hi All My deputy is on long term sick leave so my other level 3's have been taking it in turn to be the named deputy when I am in the office. This has worked well but on Thursday I will be out for most of the day at a senco conference. Staff are unwilling to take full charge for the deputising pay of £1.34 extra per hour. (Taking them from £7.66 to £9 per hour). Our chairperson at a staff meeting suggested a one of payment of £20 for having full charge for a day or part of. Me and my deputy think this is too much. What do you think?

Hi quick question... We've talked about this before on here I know. I've asked for two references one is a full reference the other is just confirming dates of work - they won't be pushed on commenting whether applicant is suitable to work with children or not, which has worked for me in the past. Is one reference enough or should I ask for a further one?

I'm the manager of a smallish setting (16 staff). We have morning staff (7.45-1.30) afternoon (12.30-6) and full days staff. We have a pre-school and a baby room. Lately staff are spending a lot of time preparing their own food/drink so wanted to tighten up the rules. I was thinking of introducing something along the lines of : Morning staff - can eat with children at breakfast 9am Afternoon staff - can eat with children at tea 4pm Day staff can eat in their allocated lunch hour. between 12-2 Its pretty hard for the baby room to eat with the children however as they are busy feeding children. I have briefly discussed ideas with senior staff but I know it will …

for a demotion? Things are changing at my setting where I am the manager. There is a move to full days, with the hope that this will get more children and therefore more staff. I have been manager now for 3 years and to be honest I'm tired. I received yet another piece of paperwork from my LEA ( an audit) that they said I should be doing (OFSTED tickbox). I'm included in ratio, keyworker for 15 children,do all the finances, admissions and doing more and more in my own time. I do not like managing staff and all that that entails (the responsibility of it all!) and my health has started to suffer (not sleeping, stressed/anxious etc ..currently having tests with Dr). I…

Any manager like me that works full time, is kind and helpful to everyone...staff...parents..children. Is a bit of a pushover and feel that in particularly with staff cant win no matter what I do...... I work 5 full days a week and do a lot in my own time...from planning to getting better qualified and just beginning to feel like I said. I also believe that our jobs are changing fast and that some staff are unwilling to change. I dont personal believe in qualifications are important but as regards ratios they are. More and more being put on small groups like ours.... Pensions, living wage, staff qualifications, dealing with staff, appraisals, mentoring etc…

Hi there, I'm just wondering if anyone is willing to share how they work in their setting in regards to full time places and part time places for 2 and 3 year olds. We are looking to change the dynamics in our nursery to include 2 year olds and also lunchtime etc... I would be really grateful if members would share how they work and organise staffing. Thank you very much. Lyndis

Can anyone recommend good, strong coloured, pencils? Most of them, I find, are not very satisfactory for light pressure and am fed up with expensive felt tips being dipped in glue!

I am getting sick and tired of parents not reading the letters/newsletters etc that we send them in paper format. We have a website, facebook page and written communication with parents. I have a training day this week and I still have parents telling me they didn't know about it. How much do I have to hand hold these parents? Anyway I am looking at going paperless as much as possible and would like to send out our letters to parents via email. No we don't have the money in the budget to purchase management software for this but just wondered if there are any other settings that use email successfully without using management software? I don't really want to wast…
