Can anyone tell me if a committee member applies for a DBS - will this suffice for a member of staff? I have a member of staff who has a CRB but is on committee and as we all know this is no longer good enough for Ofsted, so just wanted to know if once she has her DBS for committee' does that make her CRB as a staff member redundant then?

I'm interviewing for a new member of staff in a couple of weeks. We don't really do focus activities any more and instead just work with the children at the continuous provision. Do you think it would be too open ended to ask candidates to choose an area of CP to plant themselves in so that I can see how they extend a child's self initiated learning? Thanks in advance.

Just found out that an Out of School care company is about to open a Day Nursery in our little village!! How Dare they!!! Obviously junping on the 30 hours free funding malarky! Grrrrrrr To be fair we have had no 'competition' for over 20 years and have stayed afloat because we are good, friendly, and 'everybodys' children attend before starting village school - now on second generation! Nothing lasts for ever but feeling really miffed that this might just force my retirement!!! We wont be able to extend our hours - can we survive ?

Hi all, apologies for the very long post but had to vent somewhere! So, in my team there is myself as manager, an unqualified (training) member of staff and a 3rd member of staff who is qualified. We are a very small setting with only 14 children on roll and I currently do not take any money from the business and neither does the unqualified member of staff as she volunteers. So, in November I had to dismiss my level 3 member of staff due to gross misconduct and putting children at risk. I then had to use supply cover for 7 days whilst I trialled and recruited a new person. This supply cover cost us around £750! The applicants for the post were very few and ma…

Dear all, It would be interesting to know what other nurseries have in the way of displaying children's art work. Currently, we seem to stick the display with a staple gun on the wall however i have noticed that the plaster is starting to come off a bit on certain walls. Do you suggest using cork boards or felt boards to display? i am just slightly concerned about safeguarding issues with pins used on cork or felt boards. Any ideas will be appreciated. thank you

Hi everyone, we have got a member of staff working with us, 10 hours a week just until July. I'm quite happy to write a cheque each week for her wages, she doesnt have another job and pretty sure she doesnt claim benefits. Our treasurer is worried we'll be breaking some laws by not using our payroll company to do her wages properly, but to be honest, we're in the process of changing them so I dont want to set her up with them for just a month! Is it ok to pay her as temporary staff? The cheques will be signed by 2 people, the money will be declared as temporary staff and everything will go to our new accountant to comb through. Any thoughts?

So I have been so snowed under and have my staging date looming for setting up pensions for my staff and have been putting it off and am now panicking about it. Has this been quite an easy/ stress free task? (Please say yes!) I have put time aside to do it tomorrow. I've had a quick look but don't really know where to start. Has anyone used the government scheme? I have 4 staff over 25. Do they have to join a scheme? I know I need to read up about it but would be grateful for any advice from anyone who has already had to do this. Thank you.

Sorry, wasn't sure the best place to put this, but I know you'll all help I am concerned that one of our parents is drinking and driving - with the child in the car too. I had suspected before but had not seen him drive away, but now I have. He reeks of alcohol (yes, at 12.15pm, although he is a night time taxi driver, so perhaps has a drink at the end of his shift in the morning?) So, my question: I feel I must say something about this, but who to? The local safeguarding team, or the police? I am concerned that they will tell the parents who has reported a concern and they will remove the child from the setting, just as we are about to implement additional …

One of my staff returned from college saying that Prevent training is mandatory for all staff. As the manager, I have booked on to LA 'awareness' training but not until April 16. Does anyone know what the situation is regarding training. I had thought that we all need to be able to have an awareness and be able to recognise children/families who might be vulnerable to radicalisation but haven't been told the training is compulsory for everyone.
