We had some little mushrooms growing in our nursery garden before Christmas and were just picking them and throwing them away as part of our daily risk assessment/safety checks. Now we're back, there are loads of them, possibly made worse by the mild, wet weather. There are too many to just pick. Does anyone know of anything I can put on them to get rid of them and/or prevent them that would be safe? Our garden is made up of bark chips, decking and grass.

Well i am not ashamed to admit we recently had the dreaded visit and after a nightmare few hours where everything that could go wrong did we ended up with an Inadequate judgement! Yes this is embarrassing because we only recently closed another smaller setting that was judged Good and had to close this setting for financial reasons The small setting had the same staff files and same practice of the now merged setting we have just been judged on. The brief reasons for this inadequate judgement where not having our staff files in order with regards to 2 Reference checks and qualification certificates at hand that day. Yes this is poor but some of these staff have been …

I've had a response to the reply I sent regarding 'that' email from Ofsted! Well they've definitely checked things and have pulled me up on a few areas! 2 members apparently aren't cleared to be on committee - I have DBS certificates and their letter giving clearance for one and the other is staff and has an old CRB from when Ofsted did them (so for committee perhaps this isn't good enough?) - so I will ring them about that one! The other thing is they have checked Charity Commission to make sure comm members match to what they have - currently mine differ because the accounts from last financial year haven't been audited yet and therefore I still have a member…

Hi I'm reviewing how we document and record medicines. Children have their own container with meds in and I wondered what info I should keep with it. I thought of creating a document with a table: child's name, medicine and how to administer then under; date, time and who gave it? This could then be kept in the container/medipac with the medicine? What do you do? TIA

Hi I had a question regarding the withdrawal of childcare voucher scheme. One of the owners has decided to withdraw the childcare voucher scheme as of 30th June 2016 as she doesn't see the need for it. However, she is the one who introduced it a year ago at the nursery. One of the staff approached me recently that she is 10 weeks pregnant, but without any formal notice in writing. She is having a scan soon. She asked me where she stands with respect to childcare vouchers as she has been receiving it at the time of introduction for her son. Reading upon on internet, it says that it is a benefit that the employer can withdraw at any time. Not sure what to tell her. …

Just need a rant! 2 of my staff are driving me mad, they are creating such an atmosphere that no one else wants to be in the same room as them! they are fine if just left on their own but seem to want to stick their nose into everyone else's business and boss them around. They seem to have an opinion on everything but go in a mood if anyone else has a different opinion. I have 2, 16 year old apprentices that are acting more mature than them! It's like they want to be in charge, by-passing the deputy and sneering if she asks them to do anything. here's a couple of examples: i had a day off and got a phone call from one of them, asking about availability for our baby room…

We are open until 6pm on Christmas Eve We felt it might be fairer to have all staff in until 6pm (when we close) so we dont have any arguements! although we dont need them I then thought about sending people home if they have for example had no sickness in 3 months or something... just trying to find a solution Can anyone offer other suggestions? What do others do?

During supervision a staff member recently asked me if there was a limit to how many key children she should have, obviously she thinks she has too many. It got me thinking... how many key children do you / your team have?

Lovely Topic first thing in a morning... I have just changed waste collections as our local council now provide weekly collections for trade waste so they're more competitively priced and I trust their record on recycling (unlike the guys we were using were everything went in one bin - never thought that was Kosher!) Anyway, signed my contract with him yesterday and he noted that I also used a Medical Waste company to take away nappies. He said that I don't have to do this - nappies are considered 'offensive' but not 'hazardous' (made me giggle!) and as such can go in our general waste. Question: What do you do at your setting??
