Hi it's my first time publishing term dates for pre-school. I'm looking for advice please. Children are funded for 38 weeks of the year. Does this mean that the term should run for exactly 38 weeks? I ask this as I'm wondering where staff training days fit in! I'd appreciate any help. Thank you

First day back today and I have had 57 hours cancelled by parents since Friday. These are all people that have paid deposits or were with us last year. I know this happens every year but the icing on the cake was a child that has one to one support her Dad emailed me at 10.30 last night. Another texted a parent dropping her own child off to say that she was going to defer until after Xmas. The parent still hasn't told me. The 57 hours are only across 5 children. Not sure what we are going to do when parents want to prebook their 30 hours free entitlement. We have a 25 place preschool and charge £30 deposit, what do others charge. At the moment this only cover…

I'm really struggling I don't think I want to do this job any more. There's just too much responsibility and too much to worry about. It irks me that in Mrs O's eyes, our little, village Preschool needs to do exactly the same amount of work as a full daycare setting. I don't even have an office. I am a key person to a small (for now, ever-growing) group of children, including one with special needs, as well as recently having my own daughter diagnosed with ASD and all the stress and worry that goes with that and her just starting mainstream nursery at school. I have always been one to take work home with me (and now have to, literally!) and worry about it …

Dealing with staff sickness

Hi, I am a manager of a 70 place day nursery with a staff team of 15. I don't really know any other nursery managers so hoping you guys have some wisdom to share How do you deal with staff who are repeatedly being signed off work for stress/depression. I have a particular part time member of staff who got signed off for 2 weeks for the first time in September 2014. In the last year I have changed her working hours to fit in better with her son, and I also changed her area of work and who she works alongside, as these were things which she claimed were adding to her stress. I have helped her out with childcare costs and I have been paying her as a fully qualified…

Ok, so as above the parent does not want the male Nursery Nurse to change their child. There are no concerns from the parents other than he is male. My plan is to refuse and give them the option of withdrawing, surely to agree would be sex discrimination and also I disagree with the moral view point too. Any advice?

Hi, in our setting we have 2 managers out of ratios and always supernumerary. Ok, 1 of the mangers prepare the lunch meal between 730 and 930. But am not sure why in a setting of 48 registration, we need 2 managers to be out of ratio. They seem to be in office all the time. Is the paperwork side of the managers job really that bad that you need 2 of them in the office? The owner seems to be away most of the time and I have a feeling that the managers are taking him for a ride. My question is if i am aspiring to be a manager, would I be doing paperwork all the time as I would definitely miss working with the children? Most of my friends at other nurseries always seem…

Defibrillator for nursery

I always seem to be the one who is question asking so sorry in advance! Our parent group suggested that we look into getting a nursery defibrillator and I wondered whether anyone has of yet purchased one for their nursery? It seems to come attached with a whole load of health and safety worries, but on the other hand the ability to save a life is important. Anyone have any opinions or experience of defibs in nurseries?
