Can anyone help me re staff management ? I'm quite new to the role of manager and I'm still getting used to the whole managing staff bit, I have a member of staff who, while not doing anything particularly wrong is not quite getting it right either and I don't know what I can do to help her to improve. Staff member in question, I'll call her J, is 21 but has an older way about her, she has always worked with children but had quite a few jobs and been laid off for one reason or another. It's difficult because the forms I inherited that the setting use for appraisals and supervision meetings are, firstly, the same and secondly, based on the job description and because sh…

I have had somebody apply for a job who was schooled in Sri Lanka and I am a bit confused over their qualifications. She says she took GCSE's in 1992 and achieved the following: English C (Credit pass) and Maths D (Distinction pass). Is there anyway of finding out if these are equivalent to our GCSE's to meet the criteria laid down?

please someone settle my mind, its one of them weeks when you feel everything is ontop of you and every decision you make you question as your uncertain of your own mind. Someone has asked me if their NVQ in playwork is relevant to level 3 in EYFS, i have used the checker which i choose before sept 2014, as it was and it is an NVQ in playwork. The list gives various options of different titles the bottom one is full and relevant to level 3 - NVQ Playwork, various bodies. Can i take this as gospel or is their somewhere else i can check? I dont want to give an answer and retract after..... loosing my marbles.

Last Friday I had a parent rant and rave at me about infection control because her child had head lice, so it is my fault. When she realised I wasn't going to accept responsibility she turned to a photo on Tapestry of child in planting area with no coat and now child has sniffles. 2 weeks a go we had 2 days of beautiful weather here, child was planting got hot so took her coat off, but as I am (her words) staff I should stop her. So why of all the children in today did it have to be this one that gets her finger shut in cupboard door, Aaaarrrrrrgggghhhhhh! !!!!!!

I know this may sound like a really stupid question and I dont want to sound completely unintelligent but what arrangements does everyone have for their staff in regards to staff training. If staff training is scheduled outside of work hours, do you pay staff or give lieu time or is it in their contracts that staff are expected to complete training as part of a requirement of their post?

I take the view that if in doubt I notify Ofsted. This week we had an outbreak of scarlet fever so I notified them, and local health protection team. All good. However woman from Ofsted said that we had a duty to inform them of any illness affecting 3 children (including chicken pox, D & V etc). I knew you have to notify notifiable illnesses and food poisoning but not for everything else, does anyone do this? Now here's the thing I have trailed the websites/documents to find this requirement and can find anything, not even the reference to notifying notifiable illnesses! Can someone point me in the right direction?
