Can see problems arising with them needing the qualification before being counted in ratio..and not being able to find or get them on courses.. never mind costs involved..will it be even harder to recruit staff quickly , eventually all will have a certificate but moving setting without one could be hard. I know it is a good move forward and we always trained all staff as it was easier with shift patterns to ensure someone was always trained. The new requirement would mean that a nursery recruiting a level 2 or level 3 member of staff who had newly completed their early years/childcare qualification must have an emergency paediatric first aid or a full paediatric firs…

Just reading another thread and wondered if you pay your staff for Bank Holidays. We work on the basis that if you work that day you get paid, if you don't you don't. Holidays are to be taken during the month of August so that means we get a months pay in August otherwise we would get nothing. There is a bank holiday coming up in May and my understanding is that we wouldn't get paid for it.

Hi all just wanted some clarification. I have two apprentices starting with me next term. Now one is 17 very early on in the term and the other not till August. The EYFS states that practitioners need to be 17 before being counted in ratio, unless they are doing an apprenticeship then they can be counted at 16 provided they are competent. I just wondered what everybody else does? can I count the one that is 17 in May? even though she is still unqualified. Obviously we need 50% or more qualified staff but all feels 'grey' if you ask me and no one seems to really know the answers. Although I am sure there will be plenty to condemn us if we get it wrong. I do feel …

Just wondering what other settings have insurance wise - we hold our policy through PLA, but looking to add Professional Indemnity and also Trustee Indemnity. Does anyone have these added on to a policy? Would Professional Indemnity cover staff allegations made against other staff members regarding loss of earnings etc? We are struggling, like most places, with trustee liability. As soon as parents hear the word liability they tend to flee, so it would be nice to be able to tell them as long as you don't do anything you know is illegal or unsafe you would be covered. We are converting to CIO in the next month or so, so this really would remove liability from the tr…

Last week we had an incident where a parent shouted at members of staff for 15 minutes because she felt it was acceptable for her to dictate which sessions we gave to which children. This makes me feel that we could do with a dignity at work policy which would allow for removing sessions from a parent who abuses a member of staff in some way Does anyone have anything like this?
