I have a little one, he has been diagnosed with sensory processing disorder. Usually this means that he does not like to get wet outside and will want to instantly change his clothing. Yesterday it was off the chart, saying everything was wet ( when it clearly was not) that everything was dirty ( again it was not) he cried and then said help my eyes are wet! I have never had to support a child with such compulsive obsessions before! when he wants to change his clothes constantly, how do I support this? any advice would be much appreciated. Luckily yesterday there were plenty of distractions for him so he did not get too upset. Hopefully yesterday was just a bad day and h…

Hi everyone, I have recently begun looking after an 18 month old little girl who I could do with some advice on. She has food allergies, mainly dairy and soy and suffers with eczema, particularly on the backs of her thighs and on the insides of her elbows and knees. This is all under control as much as is possible. The area that I could do with some advice on is that she likes to hold something in both hands at all times and won't let go, even if she wants to pick something else up. She also sits on the floor with her legs straight out in front of her with her back perfectly straight and rocks from side to side. She seeks out sensory activities such as rice play…

Really can't remember, is it every two years or every three years we need to renew our Senco course?

Hi All Just looking for support with one of our little treasures. She is a rising 4 year old and has been wearing glasses since little. She had a check up yesterday and Mum is distraught. Her prescription has gone up 3 points in each eye with the right eye being more severe. The lenses of her glasses at present are really thick so can only imagine that the next pair are going to be thicker. This worries Mum. Little Treasure is bright and will play in all parts of the nursery, she is not too keen on noises but other than that she engages in everything. Mum reports that her left eye is doing all the work and that the patches have not worked so she is going…

Hello! I know that this post may be a bit controversial but I'll go for it anyway... Over the past few years as a result of my experience and copious amounts of reading, I have moved away from using rewards and use praise carefully and genuinely e.g not using it to get other children to follow suit but to say 'thank you' for following rules or show delight in their efforts etc. We try to use positive comments and show interest through conversations instead of just saying 'well done.' There is an awful lot of research out there that highlights how rewards (and punishments) can be detrimental in the long run - it's basically all bribes, manipulating behaviour and…

As part of The National Autistic Society’s Autism Hour and with the support of shopping centre owner intu, in the week of 2 October shops and businesses will be taking simple steps for 60 minutes that lead to a more autism-friendly world. Participating shops and businesses will be turning down music and other noise, dimming the lights and sharing information about autism with their employees. To find out which shops and businesses on your local high street are taking part follow this link. Additionally, I don't know if anyone heard this Radio 4 piece? Michael Rosen finds out what can be learnt about communication from people with autism. It was a fascinating di…

Hi everyone! I would like to know if any of you have tried these two communication programs and which one you then considered was better. Pros and cons, please. I have the impression that Makaton includes signs, so you can still communicate if you don't have the printed sign on hand. I also notice that Makaton is black and white and maybe might 'distract' the children less. I don't know. I am thinking of autistic children who pay more attention to details and might get distracted with the colours. At the same time, I do like the simplicity of Widgit. I had a look at a sample page, but it seems the symbols are quite little and I would waste a lot of paper when printing…
