Hi, not posted anything on here before so hope I ve done it right! I teach in an Early Years Unit with Reception and Nursery. This is my third school teaching in FS and things are quite different. At present we are setting up an activity in each of the areas of the room and the children are to only do this in each of the areas for the whole week! We have a wealth of resources on the shelves in each area but are not allowing the children to take anything off or to add to the activity with any of them. Im finding this different as in my past schools we have encouraged the children to use the resources to develop activities of their own or to enhance the activities in the …

Cleaning Up Vomit

I would be really grateful if you could share your procedures for dealing with vomit on carpets. There seems to be a bit of uncertainty (read between the lines) in our school Nursery setting about what we're allowed to use and not allowed to use. We haven't got a written policy and I haven't yet found any authority guidelines. I tend to use Titan Sanitizer to wash the area after the children have gone home but other staff say we shouldn't be using anything apart from water. What do the rest of you do? J

A new problem for us yesterday! One of our mums who lives a couple of hundred yards from the setting telephoned to say she was sending down her ten year old son to collect his sister from our nursery. We allowed it to happen this time, and watched them as they walked up the road and turned the corner (by that time, they are around 100 yards from their house). What do you think? Do you have a policy that includes a statement along the lines of "we will not allow our children to be collected by minors"? Or should we just get mum to write a letter giving us permission for this to happen again in the future? Any other ideas?

Hi I have a rather dog eared copy of Infectious illnesses, including Chicken pox, diarrhoea, glandular fever, impetigo, measles, mumps, ringworm, etc etc., I can't remember where I got it from - was it on here or was it from a NHS website. I have had a quick look on google but nothing comes up for exclusion from school, pre-school and child care. Can anyone help please? Sue J

I have been told by a parent, that she is not happy with the way a childminder, who brings a minded child to the setting, talks to the child and handles him a little roughly, outside the building. We have not witnessed anything ourselves so it is only hearsay. We are going to make a point of looking outside just before we open but as there as so many children coming in we more than likely won't see them. What should I do first if I don't actually see anything myself? Sue J

Please can someone clarify how long you need to keep personal information on children, e.g. registration forms, etc, after they leave your setting? I have read and been told so many conflicting bits of information - so have come to the forum as I know someone will know the answer! Thanks everyone.

Can anyone explain to me what the main difference is between these two policies and whether it is necessary to have both at a nursery? I'm probably being really thick here I know!

Hope you can help. We have a child starting with us next week who is under 3 and who will have one-to-one support. Do we include this child when assessing staffing requirements (ie 1:4 under 3 and 1:8 over 3) or does this child have own ratio ie 1:1? Probably a silly question blame it on brain having had a couple of weeks off!
