Staff Ratios In Maintained Nurseries
by Guest- 4 replies

I am wondering if anyone can help. I know that the staff ratio in maintained nurseries is 1 in 10 when there is a qualified teacher and a nursery nurse (sorry teaching assistant). What happens when there are more children e.g 40. Do you then have to employ 2 teachers and 2 TAs or can you have one teacher and 3 ta's? Does anyone know where I could find out? Thanks Sue

Hi, Many years ago (too many to count!) I wrote a handbook for students and training teachers on the acceptable conduct, presentation etc. of adults within the early years setting. Of course, now that I need it I cannot find it. Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions for a handbook, please? Thanks, Caroline

Hi all, In the standards no. 4.7 it states 'The following space standards represent minimum space per child for the whole provision' Does that mean if you have a main room plus a side room you can combine the two areas to get the maximum square footage per child? or can you only include the main room that the children play in?

'forcing' Children?
by Guest- 18 replies

I'd like your thoughts again please! Yesterday at 11.20 a.m. the children went out, all with their coats on. After 5 minutes one child took his coat off & flatly refused to put it back on. [He's nearly 3.5 years old] His mother came to pick him up 5 minutes later & complained that he was outside in just his T-shirt & vest, & that his hands were frozen. She felt that the staff should have made him put it back on. The staff knew that he would be going back in in 5 minutes, which was why he'd not been forced to do so. A member of staff had checked that his arms were warm, and he was playing under the cover of a canopy. The temperature was 9-10 C. To have …

Below is a link to a new publication from Ofsted for parents. Didn't know we had to give parents a copy of our inspection report. Would have thought it sufficient to draw their attention to it, those that are interested. http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/publications/inde...summary&id=4189 Deb

Handwriting

After lengthy discussion we have decided to change the style of writing at our nursery school from the trditional 'ball and stick' to a cursive style ( ending flicks but not lead in flicks). We will be using this style for writing on pictures, wall displays, name cards etc. I am desparately trying to find a free download for this. Sassoon Infant is great but would be very expensive especially for all computers. Any help please on more accessible fonts. Just as an extra thought I would be very interested to hear how other settings approach name writing for nursery age (3/4). - not at all, only when ready, guided, unguided, writing over etc. etc. So many children of …

I teach in a Nursery class which is part of a large primary school. Whenever we have a minor accident at Nursery (bumped head, grazed knee, etc) we complete a hand-written note detailing date, time, nature of accident and measures taken. This is done in duplicate and the top copy is sent home with the child. We would also speak to the parent or carer as we hand over the child at the end of the session. I just wondered if this was sufficient or should we be asking parents to sign the accident report? We've never done this before, but one of our childminders who collects a child from Nursery has told us today that we should be asking parents to sign. Many of our ch…
