we are trying to devlop a staff development /traning pack with in my setting at present we give the staff all the policies and proceedures in a folder when they start all we have a training form for each member of staff which we ask them where they need to training and/or where we as the nursery feel they need training so far this as been ok but resently we are finding that new staff/long term students need extra information (even how as basic as washing the childrens cups correctly) Thank you in advance Karen

Staff To Child Ratios

I work in an unusual setting but hope your expertise may help me. I work for a holiday company that has children's Creches & Clubs in some of their overseas locations - France, Italy, Turkey etc. We work to OFSTED standards and as such we work to OFSTED ratios. However, the company feels that we can operate with a minimum of 2 staff even in settings where we are looking after children from 6 months to 10 years. I feel that they have misunderstood the OFSTED regulations. With a minimum of 2 staff we have to work from 9 - 5.30 without a break as the children need to be supervised by 2 staff - surely it is illegal to work so many hours without a break…

How Much Play?

Hello, We have just started to have small group time and children's own planning time, work time etc in our reception classes. Whilst I can see the benefit to some children, those that are very young or immature, the older children seem to enjoy a more structured timetable with teacher led activities rather than complete free choice. Is it just me who feels that I am a crowd controller rather than a teacher at present and is this something that will improve over the next few months?Any reassurance would be great. Thank you Susan.

Just a bit excited as i met Sally Featherstone author extraordinaire at eh early years ex in London on Friday. She was so lovely and down to earth. Just wanted to share as I use her Little Books series all the time and recommend them to all Early Years people. They are cheap and very useful.

Forum Policy Examples

just like to say thank you to the forum. I have updated my ALL my policies this term after looking at the examples on the forum. I used these as a basic guideline and found them very useful. Had OFSTED last week, she said that my paperwork, including polices were of very high standard, some of the best she has ever seen, not bad for a little old playgroup!! I and OFSTED found them to be very comprehensive, so, anyone wanting help with policies, please, please look at the examples, thank again. ruthie

We currently use the PLA policies at our setting (we are members), who thinks it worth writing your own? It's a big job which I keep looking at, cringing and forgetting. Twice now I have started making them our own, but giving up because it's such a big job and I have so little time.

Please can anyone offer advise on taking children out on school trips in the mini bus. In the past I have worked in state schools where we have had to fill in risk assessments, and visit the place prior to the visit. Working now in a maintained school and after bringing up my concerns on risk assessment, I have been asked to produce a document to cover all visits. While numbers are low i want to make use of the bus but need the correct documents. Can anyone help with similar documents. How do you go about trips out of school ?

Staf Performance Reviews

Help. My committee have asked me if I have any documents that they can use to review the staff, or help them observe the staff to help with these reviews. Desite the fact that I seem to have every other piece of paperwork required udner the sun, I cannot for the life of me find anything that they could use as a guide in this matter. Obviously as parents their understanding of what we do is limited (and that is not a dig at them because they are an excellent committee) but if anyone has an idea of where I can find something I would be ever so grateful. In hope Mobbsters

Our new HT has told us that we should not have a rocking horse in our nursery class because of the mechanism being a health and safety issue. Is this so? The beautiful horse has been in the nursery for over 20 years. He has had his mane replaced once, and is muched loved by all. We often see tired or sad children climb up and rock away quietly and happily.

Having my inspection with the care commission (OFSTED equivalent) on Monday. We had a list of records/documents that are required for inspection sent to us today and amongst those they are expecting to see is a 'Restraint Policy'. I don't suppose anyone out there has one handy?? They are also expecting to see our 'Operational Policy Manual'. Is this just a collection of all our policies do you think?? Not panicking , just want to do things right.
