Hi I had a visit from a specialist school worker to advise us about safe manual handling training, risk assessments, equipment etc for a vulnerable child. On her recommendation we have completed a PEEP for this child but she also said that he should be named in our fire policy. Anyone else do this? Just feels wrong when these policies can be viewed by anyone (especally if they were online, which they arent at the moment). I have included vulnerable children as what we would do in the policy but did not go so far as to name them yet. What do you think?

We have a generic risk assessment listing all risks in our setting. We record accidents and incidents which are more serious than e.g. minor scratches when tripping or a stick which was moved in a way which could have hit someone on particular forms which parents sign. In addition we have kept a brief log of these same accidents and incidences, and any new risks we have discovered and added to the generic risk assessment, plus those less serious things which don't require an accident or incident record form. It's a record for the purpose of awareness. I'm aware of everything safety related because I work with the children every day and we're a team of two. What new s…

Just getting ready for a welfare visit and going through paperwork. Can anyone tell me if this publication is the most recent or has it been replaced. What to do if you're worried a child is being abused 2006. Seems like an incredibly old publication to me.

Hi Just wondered if you have a body map on your form? Is it a requirement that we have one or could we describe the injury? Does the PSLA/NDNA have one on their forms Any thoughts appreciated!

We have a four year old child who started with us after easter who has head lice - a LOT of head lice. She also has an serious eczema problem and her head is covered in many many large scabs and some areas have pus leaking. ( That is a separate safeguarding issue which I am currently addressing. Parents have done nothing about it and do not regularly apply cream to her body or use the shampoo prescribed by the GP because "it does not work". Following a 'discussion' with the parents last week they have finally taken her back and got some different shampoo. I am monitoring this closely). However as always I digress. A staff member noticed the head lice today when this chil…

We are interviewing for new staff at the moment and although it shouldn't be such an issue for me I'm wondering what I will say to an applicant who smokes..... Our policy states that staff are not to smoke on the premises, not to come to work in clothes that have been in/around smoke and not to take learning stories into a smoky atmosphere (at home obviously) but I would also prefer that staff do not smoke at work at all even if they go outside because they would have to go out the front which is in full view of houses, road, path etc and I just don't think it would promote the right image - does that make sense? This all sounds like I am really against smokers but just …

We've had a mum come in today to complain that her In laws (who provide child care for her daughter) added on a session at preschool without her consent . The grandparents did indeed come in one day last week and request that the child stay for the lunch club and afternoon session and paid the required fee. The little girl happily stayed with us all day and the grandparents collected her at 3pm. We thought nothing of this until the mum had complained today saying she didn't authorize this and that she should have been consulted. Now my stance was that she trusted the grandparents enough to childmind her for the day and that therefore she trusted them to make decisions a…

We are waiting for Ofsted to visit next half term, as it will be 5 years since the last inspection. I'm sure they will have to turn up in the next half of the summer term, especially since the school whose site we sit on (but I am a PVI setting) are also waiting for Ofsted and they had their inspection with Ofsted the same time as they visited us. So during this half term I am going to go back through all my policies, which my staff and I went through last September. I was wondering if anyone knows if there has been any significant changes to any 'acts' etc. I know that there are going to be some changes to the Equality of opportunity/SEN policies and that from Septemb…
