Hi Can anyone share any ideas about how they achieve risk assessments in their nursery. We always used to complete the risk assessment provided to us by our insurance company but at our last Ofsted this was not liked. We then joined an external company who are supppsed to support our health and safety and they gave us a risk assessment to use - however 60 risk assessments later, I'm not convinced this is right either. I attended training last week on health and safety and have been on HSE website and now I don't know what to do for the best. I just wondered what other people were doing especially if Ofsted liked it. Thanks

Hello In the past I have never had parents volunteer or work in our setting while their child attended. However, we were really in a pickle and I agreed to her volunteering while she completed her NVQ3. She is now qualified and about to become a paid member of staff. As a parent, she is on Facebook with a lot of other parents and I am wondering what to do about this now. Any suggestions? Thanks

Our County are looking likely to move towards a one intake for Nursery, all starting in September. Does anyone already do this? Would you have the older children in the mornings and younger children in the afternoon? Any words of wisdom?!

Does anyone use Dropbox or Cloud services for writing up work on their home computers? If so, do you have a policy in place or a disclaimer protecting the information? I am looking to have our templates on dropbox so staff can download them print or type up their work and then save back to dropbox, unfortunately there is a window which allows for misuse so a policy/disclaimer will be required. Has anyone done this or could give some advice. Thanks

Hello We have a child who's attended the setting for 1 1/2 yrs. a couple of weeks ago she hit a practitioner in the face after being asked 3 times to put her drawing in her drawer for later. The hit was purposeful in temper along with a very loud NO. Anyhow the practitioner had asked and used different techniques to try to get the child to put her drawing away. The child was asked not to hit and offered comfort after she had calmed. An incident form was filled in for parents to see in the hope they could reinforce the expected behaviour at home. However 2 weeks after the event mum has emailed saying she's very unhappy that we filled in an incident form and…

I am faced with the enormous task of making sense of the DBS system. We are now at a stage where we need to put our policy on DBS into writing. However, I am struggling to understand the Ofsted document on it. I feel that it is open to a lot of misinterpretation. I am keen to know if anybody has a policy that they would be happy to share. I can see lots of school ones on the internet but not many ones specifically to nurseries. I am also keen to know how nurseries are managing the payment of the checks particularly the update service. If you are asking your staff to pay for all or part of the checks or update then are you recording this in your staff contracts??? A…

Biting policy dilemma

Hi all, new to the forum. The biting policy at my setting has recently been updated, it outlines the steps to be followed when a child is biting. In short, it says that in 'extreme circumstances' the child's parents will be asked to pay for 1:1 care or be asked to leave until the behaviour stops, if everything else has been tried and no improvement made. They have asked me to read and sign it but I don't agree with it...help! I was wondering what your settings policy is on this subject and do you agree? Thank you!

can anyone clarify - do ALL complaints / minor issues have to be recorded (eg "my child came home with paint all over their jumper and im not happy" types) but only WRITTEN complaints have to be investigated and outcome reported to parents??... I have a 'official' complaints record with the "has this record been shared with parents?" and "was the outcome notified to parents within 28 days" questions on it but feel recording on this is over the top for everyday grumbles...I wonder have any recently inspected settings shared any informal recording formats with Ofsted (eg a day book / diary) - and if so what feedback was given?

Afternoon all, As the title suggests, I am wondering how everyone records comments from parents or carers? For example, I had a parent call me today to say that her child had told her she was hit in the face with a toy. She told me there is no mark but she just wanted to let us know it happened. She didn't actually complain but I feel we should record this to say what action we took. Any ideas appreciated TIA
