new breakfast club opening at school
by Guest- 4 replies

Hi all Im a childminder and drop off/collect from the local primary school. All the children came home last night with a letter saying that they are setting up a breakfast club at school which opens at 8am. The letter had a tear off slip for people who were interested to return and asking how much they pay for current before school child care so they can see if its viable to open the club. Personally I think this is so they can undercut myself and the other child minder who drop off there. My problem is that I now have at least 2 children who will probably leave to use this breakfast club. Its going to greatly affect my business. I saw one of the reply slips that…

Hubby's cousins daughter (got that lol) has asked me to go and look around a nursery with her as she thinks I'll know the proper questions to ask and what to look for etc  . What sort of thing would you be looking for or asking? it is for a 12 month old and I never sent my own at that age so not really sure what to be looking for....... Obviously I'll be asking about the staff and how much baby experience they have, what sort of routines they have etc...any ideas would be great please

Just a quick question - in a situation where a child / children do not want to eat their snack or lunch in preschool or only eat a small amount of it what happens...anyone have any policy that specifies what to do in this situation - for a one off or regular refusals.? How about if they are staying all day? I, of course, would ask parents about food intake at home so I could look at whether if was an area of need but in general I am of the belief that children will eat what they need if they are hungry and would not insist if they said no after gently encouraging / negotiating "How about this little piece"......I really don't believe in saying "you HAVE to eat thi…

Hi, does anyone out there have a proforma of a ticklist that parents can complete prior to their child starting preschool? We are looking at amending ours as parents seem to want to tick a box regardless of whether their child can do something. Perhaps giving them 3 options for different stages of one area so they can tick a box for their child and give us a more realistic idea of where their child is at. I just wondered if there is a form like this in use out there already. Thanks.

Sand/glitter in the eyes
by Guest Spiral- 18 replies

Hi there, we have the usual problem with sand going into children's eyes. This has always been a problem as we have a large sandpit. We do have a section within the policy booklet that states we will ask the parents to consider taking the child to their gp as a precaution. However... in the exact instance when a child has sand in their eyes and is desperately trying to rub them are we able to use a pipette to wash out the eyes with? Obviously sterile pipette and fluid designed for the eyes! Much as I have done first aid for a number of years, I still haven't had a straight answer. Thank you, Spiral

I have just been reviewing some of my policies, whilst looking at our safeguarding policy we felt it would be a good idea to introduce visitors badges. These will be handed over to all visitors on entry to the setting when someone signs in. This is where I would like some help, on the reverse we wanted someone safeguarding points. *strictly no use of mobile phones/cameras whilst in the setting. *confidentiality at all times. What would be your top five important safeguarding points you would like to make visitors aware of. Many thanks in advancement but when you need to do something your mind will always go blank

Physical Restraint Policy
by Guest- 2 replies

Hi there, I wonder if anyone can help me? We have just updated our Safeguarding policy, which states that we have to have a whole list of other policies adopted, some of which we haven't yet implemented. For example, we don't have a 'physical restraint' policy. We do have an 'Achieving positive behaviour' policy, which includes the line - "We use physical restraint, such as holding, only to prevent physical injury to children or adults and/or serious damage to property" but I guess that probably isn't enough. One of the staff members has found 'A Policy on the Use of Force to Control or Restrain Pupils' on the setting computer, which she remembers them discussing at …
