Keyworker

Hi Has anyone got any whizzy ideas of how to implement the Key Person role. We are a large local Authority nursery attached to a school. We have 2-3 year olds. Two Nursery Nurses over see the care of the 2 year olds and a Teacher and 2 part time Nursery Nurses for the 3-4 year olds. Because there is a qualified teacher the keyworker groups can be quite high, up to 20! Also because the Nursery nurses are part time they have to share the role of Key person . The key person currently greets the parents, manages all toileting, leads family time and compiles the Learning Journey. All staff observe all the children. If the Key person is not in there is a dedicated "deputy" …

we have a new senco who says too many children in our school are on the special needs register and we should only write an iep if they are school action plus and after an outside agency has decided on targets. is this what othe nurseries do? we have always written an iep so that when outside agencies come in we can show what we have targetted, and success or otherwise of this intervention. she says just do intervention work without putting them on the sen register cheers for any advice x

Having just read on another thread that 'Every Child Matters' is no longer 'in use' by DFE/Ofsted I've realised that I need to sort out my policy folder! I was thinking about just going through Statutory Framework and putting the policies in order of each requirement, but then I'm sure there are a lot more policies in my current folder than there are requirement!! So my question is, how do you organise yours?

Sorry but I need to vent and hoping some of you will be sympathetic to our situation! My SENCO asked for our area SENCO to come in to observe one of our children who is displaying very hurtful behaviour towards his peers and my staff. This has been getting progressively worse and he now constantly needs a member of staff to support him during sessions to prevent him from hurting children. The SENCO and key person have been observing the behaviour and events that lead up to incidents occurring but we can see no pattern to the behaviour or any particular trigger. Anyway, after being sick and tired of staff getting punched and slapped in the face by this child every …

Hi there, I have a 3 year old starting in September and he has an immune deficiency, which basically means he's prone to picking up all the coughs and colds which go around any early years setting. I have just been thinking of ways to minimise the risk for him. There are a few things that we do in general as a setting and I wondered if anyone currently allows the children to have supervised access to hand gel. I was thinking perhaps on entering our setting and again after washing their hands before they eat. I will be keen to hear your thoughts or experiences. Many thanks

We have a new child starting next week at our holiday club who has only just been diagnosed (couple of weeks) with diabetes, I have arranged for staff training with the diabetic nurse, just wondered if anyone has a medical care plan already in place I could adapt?

Sun hats
by Guest- 13 replies

Hi all, We do not have a policy on sun protection, however, I think we need one. At the moment we do insist that parents apply sun cream and sign and bring in cream for us to reapply. My question is do you insist on children wearing sun hats? We have parents and children who are very good at bringing/wearing hats but despite numerous requests other parents have not brought them in - we have our own hats but should we be bringing children in if they refuse to wear them? Which they frequently do! Thanks

Hi, I know this has been covered in other posts after doing a search, but I just wanted to do a quick straw poll on here, if that's ok? I'm on the committee of our playgroup (I'm also a nursery nurse) and my big passion is the key person system. Our nappy changing policy has that nappies are changed by key person/back up key person as per PLA policy. However, I KNOW this doesn't happen and the argument is that some of the younger children (we take them from 2) would get too attached and wouldn't like it when the back up person does it, so one person doing all nappies each day is a far better system. I've searched the EYFS briefly (!) for the actual part where it…
