Emergency Procedure

Hi everyone, Looking for some advice please? I am in a pack away setting,in a village hall. Our fire procedure is to blow a whistle and then all the children stop and line up at a red dot, we then head to our assembly point. This works very well, however we have a child starting in session who has a severe nut allergy. Because we like most settings work to ratios, so have limited staffing and then try to combine "proper" free-flow play, we are coming up with a problem. In the event of an anaphylactic shock, the staff need to be alerted immediately. Now my team think that the whistle will work, however I am not happy with this because: a. The e…

Handwashing

Hello all, this is my first post, I have just started in a new nursery and would like some advice on how you all deal with handwashing in your settings. We have no sinks in the rooms so use portable sinks which are broken, so water is put in the sink and all the children wash their hands using the same water. I am concerned the children are simply spreading germs around, the water is usually cold and they do not use soap. When I escort children to the toilet, they seem suprised that I ask them to wash their hands, and say things like 'i don't like getting my hands wet' or do not seem to know how to use the soap dispenser. I have also observed that little emphasi…

Problem With Entrance Door At School

Hi all Well had LEA support and come and view a session of school club which I am committee member of. Result was very positive however he brought up a safeguarding issue which he said he brought up a couple of years ago and was still not sorted!! School club is based on school site. The problem is one of the entrance doors which is right next to the school club room. The entrance door has cctv and only accessible using a code. However, getting out of the door means the children just have to press the green door release button and away they go. Seeing as the toilets that the children use are also opposite this door (next to club room) staff now have to accompany the…

Today during the session a child pushed another child off his chair which resulted in a nasty bang to the head. Child refused to say it was him who pushed until right at the end of the session so an incident form was filled out. Got mum in at the end of the session and explained although no one witnessed it the child admitted to pushing the other child off the chair. Without saying any names to her the mum said that **** had pushed her child yesterday and it was the same child who had been pushed off the chair (this is after mum coming in to say her son had said it was someone else yesterday). We explained that regardless of what happened yesterday the fact was th…

Recruitment Of Ex-offenders Policy

Hi all, I am after your wisdom yet again please. We (me and leader) have been looking through policies today, picking out oldest ones to review and update. We came across this one which was last updated in 2005, so obviously it may be out of date. We have our suspicions that it was a PSLA which someone downloaded and bunged in the folder, without thinking about what it actually meant. We're particularly not clear about the 1974 Act, and whether we need to have reference to it. There's a section saying: 'We ensure that they (staff) have received appropriate guidance and training in the relevant legislation relating to the employment of ex-offenders, e.g. the Rehabi…

Administering Medication Help! 1 2

A parent has demanded that I use E45 cream from a tube to wash his childs hands as he has ezema on his wrist. I have asked him to go to his G.P for some prescribed cream/soap as I felt it came under the heading of medication. Our polices and procedures require only prescribed medication with the childs name and the strength and dosage on it. He has given me written permission to use E45 as a soap. He has stated that if I refuse he will put a wriiten complaint into the Committee (Which his wife is one) and complain to OFSTED. Ofsted have said I should follow my Polices, however if they deem them inflexible to the childs needs I an in the wrong, in there eyes. My local C…
