Gill Jones, Ofsted Early Education Deputy Director, has written in Nursery World about the recent changes to the safeguarding requirements. It is a very useful and clear article - you don't have to be a subscribing member to read it so I have put a link to the article below. Inspecting safeguarding in the early years

Please can someone clarify ratio's as it is very unclear in the EYFS we have three level 3 staff, one level 2 and two unqualified members of staff. 1st question: if all three level 3 staff, one level 2 and one unqualified is working how may 2, 3 and 4 year olds does that cover? 2nd question: two level 3 staff, one level 2 and two unqualified how many does that cover? How many 2 year olds, 3 year olds and 4 year olds can level 3 and level 2 have and also how may for unqualified. We are just about to go through the registration process so would like to have this clear as I'm finding the wording in the EYFS confusing. We can have 32 in the setting but wou…

Would we meet legal requirements if we let visitors keep their phone in their bag or pocket - just supervising them to ensure that they don't use the phone?

I am sure many of you have seen the recent guidance re safety sockets which we have used for many years in our plug sockets. Initially I was sceptical and as our sockets are at child height (we have no control over these as we are in a community hall) I did a risk assesment which said we would continue to use them). However following confirmation from the council that the hall is fitted with the lates type of sockets, circuit breakers and a trip switch style fuse box I have been digging deeper into the situation and will now be removing all my covers henceforth. Has anyone else done this and if so does anyone have a risk assessment that I could have a peek at to s…

The changes to the safeguarding requirements are in the document for inspectors, but which is the document for providers? EYFS Requirements Lead: The lead practitioner must attend a child protection training course (taking account of any advice from the LSCB or local authority on appropriate training courses) that enables them to identify, understand and respond appropriately to signs of possible abuse and neglect. Staff: Providers must train all staff to understand their safeguarding policy and procedures, and ensure that all staff have up to date knowledge of safeguarding issues. …

I am wondering if any of your setting is familiar with this role and whether you have got a policy regarding physical activity and nutrition.

To add to new guidance queries the deputy... I was thinking oh that's fine I have a deputy until it occurred to me that on Monday we are both going on a home visit so will both be out of the setting. Does that mean I now need a third person to cover this responsibility in such situations? I only have three full time members of staff as it is?
