Hi All I was asked by a friend who is expecting what to look for when she visits potential child care settings for her new baby. I have put together a list for her which I thought I would post on her for everyone to use/ look at and add to. I am sure i have not covered half the things but I am hoping I have covered the main points. Questions_to_Ask_your_Potential_Day_Nursery.doc

I am at a small preschool and my Deputy has now stepped down. Now there is just me Supervising the staff. How many Supervsiors do you have. One group I know has five. This is the second time I have had a Deputy step down - begining to wonder if its me!! It now means that I cannot have any time off until she is replace and have just got my letter for EYFS training in September. I am wondering if it would be better to have two memebers of staff as deputy. My Deputy that stepped down did not work all session so some days it would just be me in. Smiles

I have just started re-writing my employment contracts using a template provided by our EECU. It mentions that staff must adhere to the 'Alcohol and Drug Abuse' policy, although i do not have one of these. Is anyone else familiar with this policy, if so, can you give me some points that would need to be included. Many Thanks

Changing Nappies Of Older Children

just wondering what people do when changing the nappy of a child - 2 -4 year olds (as opposed to a baby). query has arisen as we are reflecting on the provision we have and what we need in our new build. at the moment we have a changing area in our nursery toilets (which are directly off the nursery room). At the mo there is no changing area on the new plans with a query as to whether we should be changing children at all. I said that inclusive practice means we do have to accept children in nappies and feel that we should change them in the same place that others go to the toilet so we can encourage them to begin to use the toilet as part of the nappy change …

'safer Food Better Business'

Hi. I have recently had a visit from someone on behalf of Environmental Health to help us put safe procedures in place in line with the Env. Health publication 'Safer Food, Better Business'. We do have safe systems already (!) but I've taken the view that I would rather be squeaky clean and ready just in case Env. Health come and inspect us (which they have never done in the 14 years I've worked in this nursery!!!). Anyway, one thing we need apparently is a Cleaning Policy. I'm reasonably comfortable with tweaking what we've got but would like to look at someone else's just in case I've forgotten something vital. Anyone like to share?

Keyworker Policy And Eyfs
by Guest- 3 replies

Up until now, we haven't had a separate 'Keyworker Policy' (for Pre School - rising 3s to 5s) - we've included information about our keyworker system in various bits of other policies and documents (including a letter to parents on admission). Now that keyworkers have been 'formalised' in the EYFS however, I think a specific Keyworker Policy would be a good idea. Would anyone mind sharing either their policy or details about their keyworker system (for example, do you make sure that keyworkers are always the first to welcome their key children, or that they speak to parents at pick-up, etc? We don't do this as routine, but perhaps we should ...?). Also, has anyone re…
