hi, I am doing the topic colourful celebrations next term but dont really have any books to go with it. I work with special needs children so the books need to be simple. Does any one have any good ideas. Thanks Also just thought to ask-has anyone got any ideas what our role play area can be? Jo

Harvest Festival - Corn Doll

Is it just me who is mystified as to why we are allowed to show, use and even make corn dollies at harvest time but we cannot celebrate halloween? The making of corn dollies goes back many thousands of years. It was a Pagan custom and evolved from the beliefs of the corn growing people who believed in the Corn Spirit. Corn dollies were made at Harvest time from the last sheaf of corn cut. The Corn Spirit was supposed to live or be reborn in the plaited straw ornament or corn doll and was kept until the following spring to ensure a good harvest. One year six production of Joseph and I've become obsessed with ancient Egypt! We've decided to 'do' ancient Egypt and I'm on the hunt for any festivals. I've Googled it and have come up with a couple, mainly the solstice/sun festival at Abu Simbel. Does anyone know of anymore? Or other Egyptian ideas? Thanks in advance. Fluff x

HI Im working in a pre-school room, but am very concerned that we aren't doing a whole lot to develop the children's awareness of: * The culture of themselves and others * equality of opprotunity /exloring roles/ disability * wider cultures/ ways of living /communities (ie india, china etc etc) we have some multicultural jigsaws and that's about all.... i really would like some ideas for age appropriate activities/displays/discussions/resources for children aged 3 years - nearly 5 years. i would be most grateful for any input/suggestions.
