'old Toys' Activity Suggestions
by Guest- 6 replies

Hi everyone I work in a local authority museum, and do various sessions with Foundation Stage children in our local area. Last term I took out a box of replica 17th century household items and did a session called 'Imagining the Past', which was really well received. This year, I've been asked if I can do something based around old toys. I've dutifully gone out and bought a huge box of replica historic toys (and have pinched some 'new' toys from my daughter's overflowing toybox as a contrast!), but I'm not quite sure how to organise the session. I usually have half a class (15 children) at once, for about 30-40 minutes. For the other session, the children sat …

During the summer hols I gathered a lot of small boxes. You know, the boxes a pair of earings come in, watch boxes, different sized gift boxes, pretty ones with flowers on, little padded ones, small decorative tins, boxes that open different ways, etc. I found a large tray box (about 2ft long, 18 inches wide and 4 inches deep) that all the small boxes would fit into if you jiggled them about a bit. Inside some of the boxes I put different things - plastic insects, little dolls house people, dinosaurs, large threading beads, farm animals, necklaces, sponges, etc. The children love our "box of boxes" - they shake the boxes and try to guess if there is anything inside them a…

Independent 'cooking'
by Guest- 9 replies
- 2.3k views
Somehwere I read about a nursey or nursery school where the children were able to follow a very simple recipe to make their own cripie cake, I think it was, whenever they elected to do so. I don't think it was on here, but I may be wrong. Does it ring a bell with anyone? I'm very interested in instances where children are able to work with such independence. Whatever the recipe was, I'd guess it involve 'cold' cooking. I'd be very grateful for any leads, if nothing else I'd know I hadn't dreamt it!
