I don't know about anyone else but by the the time I've exhausted all my books and ideas I've picked up along the way I still need more variety when it comes to independent or chilid initiated activities. has anyone got any different, fun ideas. I already use tracing, threading, large tongs to pick up objects, plastic nuts and bolts, play dough, sand, weaving dot to dots. If you have any different ideas I'd be really glad to hear from you. I was sent this by email, it shows reindeer playing merry christmas using different instruments, you can click on each reindeer to start it playing. Hard to explain. Last year the children dressed in reindeer hats and copied the band, it was really good.

We are planning to make our role play area into a florist shop ( in 2 weeks time -our theme is growing and nature). I have allocated the job to my NVQ 2 student. I have suggested that the week starts with her involving the children in "creating" the layout, with signs etc. We will visit a local florists at the beginning of the week. What I would like are any ideas of resource items that she can start collecting now ie: flower catalogues, tissue for wrapping bouquets etc. my brain is tired and I'm not a "flower" person so can't inspire my student, here's hoping some of you can. Peggy ps. not too worried about maths focus ie: cost of flowers, money, tills e…

Treasure Baskets

I got this idea from a book, and basically you have a big basket that the children independently access with various resources in for a given topic. Some of the ideas that I have are magnetism, mirrors and autumn, but I was wondering if anybody else has any ideas or proven 'baskets' that the children really like. (Can you tell that I am out of ideas tonight?? :-))

At pre-school we have a 2 year plan for topics but we have decided to try a new one - Light and Dark. I have a few ideas such as comparing daytime and night time, starry nights and shadows. Also in that half term there is Divali and Bonfire night so that is helpful! Resources such as torches and reflective or fluorescent materials also come to mind. Owl Babies, Can't you Sleep Little Bear and Room on the Broom are books that I thought of. I would like to set up a sensory area, I was thinking of oil lamps, fibre optic lamps etc (definitely with adult supervision). As this is a new topic it could take a bit longer in the planning! So hopefully I might get some ideas from…

I am trying (agianst much opposition) to change our role play area from a house (where the children just run in and out throwing dishes and food around, leave and refuse to tidy afterwards; not for me but as a senior staff member, I am not always in the area!!!!!) to Percy the Park-keeper's cottage. So far I have a small cooker, wooden table and chairs, kettle, crockery, cutlery etc, a "homemade" fireplace with a basket of logs, 2 sets of Park-Keeper gear (wellies, coats and hats) wheelbarrows, plant pots, garden tools, seed catalogues, gardening mags and so on, There is a small bread crate with a blanket for sick animals to rest in (complete with bottles etc). Can I…
