We have 9 new committee members!!! Thats 10 with me, so dont have to rely on the staff being on the committee now, although they havent officially come off (dare to let them try) I cant remember a time when we had so many parents turn up to an AGM and I've been involved with the playgroup for 14 years. It was fab, absolutley brilliant. Our new treasurer works at compnay that can set up a web page, and she and 2 of the other parents have so many ideas for fundraising I actually felt myself sitting back and taking a big sigh of relief. They were all really surprised at the lack of support we've had over the years and are set to get parents more involved. The…

I sent all the paperwork the man asked for by the date he asked for it, October 14th and then didnt hear a thing. Our AGM is next week, we have 7 nominations and a treasurer who works for a company who help businesses to claim grants. So if nothing else this episode has shown me that if people are poked hard enough with a big enough stick, anything can happen. I've been checking our details on the CC web site but nothing had changed until today...all our details have been updated, includng the constitution we are working with, which I take to mean they have understood the roles the 2 staff members were doing and why. An email would have been nice, you know t…

Hi I have done a search and found info from many of you that are managers and have been through this but only suzie seems to have gone through one as chair. Is there anyone else. Our chair told me today that she received a letter from OFSTED saying that they had repeatedly tried to phone her on such a date (she said she was in!) but that as they could not contact her they have referred this to an inspector to set up the suitable person interview. Now she has only been in the position for 5 months has no childcare experience and I am supposed to be taking over at next AGM. Whereas I think i may be ok Im not sure what they will ask of our chair. What things should i sug…

Your Lea - Helpful And Supportive Or Not? 1 2

I was about to post this on another thread but thought it might merit one of its own. I just wanted to do a straw poll really (ahead of potential cuts at LEAs) to find out how helpful other committees (and practitioners) find their LEA early years teams. I ask partly because I have just spent an extremely frustrating 2 weeks trying to find the answer to a very simple question about the graduate leader fund. To be honest, I would have been better posting my query on here than asking my LEA. The chain went like this: LEA refers me to 'someone else' to answer the query, I tried CWDC, then DoE, then Revenue, who told me my LEA must answer my question. I then quizze…

Hi all, Hope I am in the right section.. sorry if not. Now a parent as come forward and said they dont think it was a legal vote? i have no idea can you help no staff where involved in the nominations or second's hope this makes sense, also does anyone know what the ratios etc are with regards to voting? thanks mel

Adapting The Psla Constitution?
by Guest- 25 replies

Hi all, We've got our AGM today and after Rea's experiences recently I was prompted to read the Constitution in a bit more detail than previously (we have 2008 PSLA one). There are a couple of things in here where in all honesty we are not doing exactly what we should be, it's a practical thing to do with numbers of parents willing to serve on committee, also a few technicalities that we're not following to the letter. My question is, then, do we HAVE to stick to this constitution, or could we create a specially adapted version to suit our setting? To my eye, this constitution seems to be partly written to give more power to the PSLA than I might want (why…

Yesterday I emailed the charity commission to ask if we could become a community interest company and retain our charitable status. I explained we were having great trouble getting a commitee. Today a very nice but very serious man phoned me to say that without the officers we would have to close. I explained that at present the treasurer and secretary, although now staff were continuing until I could get some committee members at our AGM in Nov. Very strongly, he warned me that by letting staff do a trustee role I was in breach of the constitution and that they could claim back any wages the staff had received. I explained that they had filled in a conflict of interest…

I went to playgroup this morning. We have a parent willing to be treasurer, she is treasurer for the company she works for and one of their aims is to help small businesses get funding and grants. So couldnt have worked out better! We also have 5 other people who have agreed to join, they were all horrified at the thought we might not be able to open. As well as these definites we had interest from about 3 or 4 others, who didnt want to join, but who said they will do whatever they can to support us in the future. One of these was the 16 year old sister of one of the children, what a star. I've written my response to the CC, photocopied policies, job descriptions, minut…

Feel better now Here's the problem. We're being given some GLF money to 'boost the wages of the person doing the EYPS'. I ask the LEA if this money was subject to tax, and who should pay employer's contributions, they said ask the revenue. I asked the revenue, they said yes, subject to tax, but I would have to ask the LEA about who should pay employer's contributions. No one is willing to give me a definitive answer the EYT are as helpful as a chocolate radiator. The upshot is that, if we as a setting pay the contributions, it will COST US about £150 to pay a bonus that we didn't actually choose to pay in the first place. Surely this is madness!!?? Do y…
