How easy do you find it to put together a committee? We are finding each year is getting more and more difficult, we are a pack away village hall setting and all our feeder schools now offer nursery places which means the majority of our parents leave us after 1 year. We have 1 more committee meeting left for this academic year - 3 members are leaving to go to school and will resign at our AGM in September, leaving us with 2 committee members who are staying. How do you go about trying to get new intake mums to come along to the AGM and be Chair straight off?! Ideas very welcome.

Last night I found myself unable to say NO and so this morning I'm CHAIR. Funny isnt it? My relationship with playgroup started 16 years ago as a mom getting some much needed relief from a toddler after having another baby. I then became staff when my youngest was 3, because the playleader kept asking me to, I thought, 'well, why not? I get the school holidays off'. I left 8 years later but went onto the committee as a sleeping member just to make up the numbers more than anything else and now I've slowly (but inexorably it seems) progressed to Chair. This morning I keep shaking my head at myself. Just cant seem to say NO.

Would anyone know this?... If you are a chair and you declare yourself bankrupt in your personal life, can you remain as chair, or does it mean you have to resign your post?

Hi all, I had a very interesting conversation today with the PSLA. In fact it just goes to show that sometimes advice can get altered through the re-telling, a bit like chinese whispers, because it's not as simple as '3 months wages and rent and redundancy money'. In terms of the calculation, what they said is this: If the setting were to close tomorrow, what would your outstanding liabilities be? And that figure is basically what your reserve fund should be. So, if staff have a month's notice in contracts, then only a month of wages needs to be kept. Similarly with your lease, if it's only a month's notice, then that is what you should calculate. Also, you need …

Reserve Funds

This might seem like an odd question to those whose settings are struggling to stay afloat, but I've taken over as chair of a pre-school committee and we have a ridiculous amount in our reserve. (I won't be specific on here but suffice to say over £10k). This seems to have come about as we have a very active fund raising sub committee who do maybe 10 events a year. I'm trying to persuade the team to invest more of our reserve in the setting, but they are reluctant. For instance, I suggested giving our leader a budget rather than making her come kow towing to us for every penny. This didn't go down well ('if we give her a budget she will just spend it all' - well, …

How Can We Achieve Continuity?
by Guest- 14 replies

Well after whinging on the welcome thread about this, I thought I would start a new topic where we could post ideas for achieving better continuity when committee members change. I am planning to create a kind of 'timeline', with details of what should be happening at each point in a yearly calendar. The stuff that should in theory happen every year, e.g. appraisals, AGM, etc. We're also meant to do a kind of 'handover' but as there has often been a gap before getting new committee members, this didn't happen when I took up the post. I certainly think I need to look ahead and take responsibility for 'priming' a new chair person before I leave. Does anyone el…
